George Russell Honors Lewis Hamilton with Iconic Singapore Win Photo

George Russell paid tribute to Lewis Hamilton by recreating the legendary driver’s celebrated winner’s photo from the 2018 Singapore Grand Prix after claiming victory at the 2025 event at Marina Bay. This Lewis Hamilton Singapore tribute highlighted a moment that spans seven years of Russell’s journey in Formula 1, combining respect for his predecessor with his own rising success.

Recreating a Legendary Celebration on Marina Bay Circuit

Following his triumph in Singapore, Russell imitated Hamilton’s iconic pose by sitting cross-legged on the track, placing the winner’s trophy beside him, and clasping his hands while smiling for the camera. The main difference was that Russell remained fully zipped in his race suit, while Hamilton had notably posed in his fireproof underwear in the original shot.

Russell explained the significance of this gesture on social media:

“In 2018 I was with Mercedes in Singapore and watched Lewis take an incredible pole position and then win the race,”

George Russell said.

“I remember how he took a really cool photo on the track afterwards – and I dreamed back then of one day being in Formula 1 myself.”

George Russell added.

At that time, Russell was already on track toward Formula 1, serving as a Mercedes junior and reserve driver while competing in Formula 2. As one of the favorites in the feeder series, he would go on to win the championship shortly after the Singapore race weekend. His career progression was confirmed the following month when he secured a full-time seat with Williams.

Singapore Marks Russell’s Fifth Grand Prix Triumph

“Seven years later, it’s a very special moment for me to win here in Singapore and to celebrate this success together with my team,”

Russell reflected.

This victory in Singapore was the fifth of Russell’s Formula 1 career. His previous wins had come at Brazil in 2022, Austria and the USA in 2024, plus Canada in 2025. All of these successes were achieved driving for the Mercedes works team, with whom Russell has been a full-time driver since 2022.

Marina Bay has clearly become a significant venue for Russell’s growth and achievements, symbolizing both his humble beginnings as a hopeful junior and his established status as a race winner alongside legendary figures like Hamilton.

Looking Ahead: The Journey of a Mercedes Driver

Russell’s tribute and victory underline the ongoing evolution of Mercedes’ driver lineup, blending respect for the legacy of Lewis Hamilton with the ambition of the newer generation. As Russell continues to race for the British team, moments like these reflect his thoughtful and determined approach to his Formula 1 career.

The Singapore Grand Prix win not only adds to his tally but also highlights the deep connection between past and present drivers, encouraging optimism for what lies ahead in his Formula 1 journey.
