As the 2026 Formula 1 season approaches, changes in regulations are expected to shake up the competitive order, offering teams a chance to start anew. Among these developments, George Russell is being favored over reigning champion Max Verstappen to claim the title, according to former F1 driver Karun Chandhok. Russell’s opportunity arises amid Mercedes’ strong position as a works team leading its engine development against rivals preparing to overcome fresh challenges.
Mercedes’ Power Unit Development Gives Russell an Edge
Red Bull’s partnership with Ford to develop new power units contrasts with Mercedes’ more established engine works setup, which is seen as a major advantage for the German manufacturer. This longstanding expertise in powertrain development places Mercedes in a prime spot to challenge for the championship next year. Chandhok highlights that this longstanding infrastructure supports Mercedes’ prospects, especially for George Russell, who has yet to contend seriously for a title despite seven years in the sport.
Insights on Team Integration and Competitive Systems
Karun Chandhok points to the importance of integrated operations between chassis and power unit divisions within racing teams. While Red Bull and Audi are new to full engine development and can claim some leniency in their progress, Mercedes and Ferrari have no such excuses due to their extensive experience as works teams. This integrated approach is expected to be critical under the 2026 regulations.
“He [Russell] is my championship favourite, What we’re hearing from a lot of the drivers is the word ‘systems’. This year, having a team from a chassis and power unit side as an integrated operation – which really, it’s Mercedes, Audi, Ferrari [and Red Bull] – there are now four. Two of them have the excuse of being newbies, Audi and Red Bull. For Ferrari and Mercedes, there are no real excuses, because they are the works teams.” Karun Chandhok told Sky Sports F1.
Partnership Between Mercedes and McLaren Strengthens Both Teams
The collaboration between Mercedes and McLaren further enhances Mercedes’ advantage in the upcoming season. Mercedes will supply power units to McLaren, a team that has demonstrated strong performances recently. This partnership allows close communication and shared development efforts, which is particularly valuable during the early stages of adapting to the new regulations. Chandhok believes this cooperation could be a decisive factor in giving George Russell a competitive edge.
“And although, in terms of hardware, by regulation, McLaren and the other customers have to get the same power units as the works Mercedes team, I just think having both sides talking to each other so much more in an integrated way has to be an advantage in the early stage of this power unit regulation, For me, that puts George as the favourite for the season.” Karun Chandhok noted.
Challenges Ahead and Expectations for the 2026 Championship
Despite Mercedes’ current lead in development, the 2026 season will present formidable challenges from various teams eager to capitalize on the new regulations. Drivers like George Russell and McLaren’s Kimi Antonelli will aim to maintain momentum and secure strong results from the outset. The evolving competitive landscape promises intense battles on track, with Mercedes aiming to convert its groundwork into championship success.
