At a recent preseason press event, IndyCar driver Graham Rahal addressed questions regarding the retirements of Brittany Force and John Force from NHRA drag racing, highlighting the reduced presence of their prominent family in motorsports. Rahal, known for his own racing career and his ties to two significant racing dynasties, discussed the future outlook amid these departures.
Graham Rahal is the son of renowned IndyCar champion Bobby Rahal and married Courtney Force, daughter of drag racing legend John Force, linking two of the sport’s most respected families. Courtney Force retired from professional drag racing in 2019, while her sister Brittany Force announced her retirement from top fuel dragster racing in 2025. John Force himself declared his retirement later that year, after an illustrious career spanning four decades.
John Force’s Retirement Following Serious Injury and Its Impact on Drag Racing
John Force’s decision to retire came after a severe brain injury sustained in a 2024 crash at Virginia Motorsport Park. The NHRA icon underwent months of therapy, eventually stepping away from competition 17 months post-accident. Force’s exit marks the end of a significant chapter in drag racing history.
During the press conference, a reporter noted that along with the Forces’ retirements, fellow legacy driver Marco Andretti announced his departure from IndyCar, leaving Graham Rahal as one of the few remaining third-generation racers active today. When asked about this moment in racing history, Rahal commented on the weight of the situation, saying,

“It weighs a little heavy on me with my end sort of being near, too. It is an interesting time, right, to build up these future names.” (told the media)
Expanding on John Force’s lasting influence and the continuing involvement of both the Rahal and Force families, he added,
“We’re always going to be involved. I don’t see the Rahals not being involved or the Forces not being involved, in some capacity, in some way, as one big family in two separate teams, whatever, I don’t know. I think it’s important that our name stay involved in the sport, particularly in drag racing,”
“Drag racing is not the same without John Force. I mean, that is just the cold hard truth. The girls have to dig in and be more involved. I think they’ll do that. You’ll see a presence there,” added Graham Rahal
Rahal Shares How His Wife Encourages Him to Continue Racing
Graham Rahal, who recently turned 37 and races for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, is also a father to three daughters: Harlan, Tinley, and Fallon. With nearly two decades in IndyCar, Rahal revealed that conversations about his own retirement are often met with resistance from Courtney Force.
“I guess I’m the only one left. Courtney, every time I tell her that I’m thinking about retiring, the one person that’s against it is my wife, big-time. I tell her she’s quite selfish when she tells me that. She feels that. Man, what do we have left? Nobody else is in it anymore. It’s so different. But at the end of the day as I tell them, and I would say the same here, we’re always going to be here,” said Rahal
Both families have expressed intentions to maintain their role in motorsports, with Rahal competing in IndyCar under the Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing banner and the Force family continuing through John Force Racing. Their ongoing commitment ensures the family legacy will persist despite recent retirements within the sport.
