Honda’s team manager, Alberto Puig, confirmed that no decisions have been made regarding the Japanese manufacturer’s rider lineup for the 2027 MotoGP season, amid ongoing speculation about Fabio Quartararo’s potential move. With discussions in early stages, Honda remains focused on supporting its current riders while evaluating future plans.
Uncertainty Surrounding Fabio Quartararo’s Future with Honda
Reports surfaced prior to the upcoming 2026 pre-season test suggesting that 2021 world champion Fabio Quartararo had signed a contract to join Honda for two years starting in 2027. However, Quartararo denied these claims, acknowledging only that Honda is among the possible options he is considering.
The rumors grew stronger following Yamaha’s troubled Sepang test, where the brand missed its second day due to safety problems with its new V4 engine. These issues intensified speculation about Quartararo’s next move away from Yamaha.
Speaking on the topic, Puig explained the current situation, saying,
“Well, at this moment, I can tell you, everybody is talking to everybody. I mean, all manufacturers are talking to all riders, and all riders are talking.”
He added,
“It’s true that this time of year is coming earlier all the time, this process. But, nothing is clear, and the only thing that is clear for Honda at this moment is that we have to support our current riders, and this is what we are going to do.”
Honda’s Present Commitments and Rider Competition
Honda’s existing contracts include Johann Zarco and Diogo Moreira, who have secured factory deals at LCR through 2027. This leaves the factory team’s seats as the only ones potentially available if a signing like Quartararo’s were finalized.
Joan Mir and Luca Marini enter the 2026 season competing for their future at Honda, with only one factory seat realistically open. Puig acknowledged the tense atmosphere in the paddock, saying,

“I think many, not only them [are fighting for their future].”
He further reflected,
“It’s a year where contracts are finished. But honestly speaking, all of the paddock is in the same situation, not only the riders.”
He also noted,
“Of course, when you don’t have a contract for the next season, you have to fight.”
Positive Signs from Pre-Season Testing at Sepang
Despite the uncertainties over rider placements, Honda had a successful pre-season test session at Sepang. Joan Mir highlighted the improvements in the team’s machine, describing the current RC213V as the best motorcycle he has ridden from Honda so far, suggesting strong potential heading into the new season.
The Implications for Honda and MotoGP’s 2027 Lineup
As the 2026 season approaches, Honda’s cautious approach to confirming its 2027 rider lineup reflects the complexity of negotiations across the MotoGP paddock. With multiple riders and manufacturers engaging in early talks, the eventual decision will significantly influence the competitive landscape. Honda’s commitment to its current riders combined with interest from Fabio Quartararo indicates a critical period ahead for team strategy and rider positioning in the sport.
