How Marc Marquez’s Ducati Test Upended Bagnaia’s 2025 Season

Francesco Bagnaia entered the 2025 MotoGP season as a shadow of his former championship-winning self, with many pointing to Marc Marquez’s initial test with Ducati as a key moment that destabilized Bagnaia’s campaign. Despite official voices from Borgo Panigale insisting Marquez’s arrival did not hamper Bagnaia’s progress, the Italian rider’s decline in form contrasted sharply with Marquez’s rise.

After being a consistent title contender during his four previous seasons with Ducati’s factory squad, Bagnaia’s presence in the 2025 championship race was minimal, while Marquez quickly established himself as a dominant force on the grid. A recurring problem throughout Bagnaia’s difficult season was the GP25 bike, which proved to be a significant obstacle. Commentators like Valentino Rossi also weighed in on Bagnaia’s struggles, adding to the pressure.

How Bagnaia’s Focus on Marquez’s Feedback Created Challenges

Marco Melandri, a five-time premier class Grand Prix winner, suggested that Bagnaia’s own approach contributed to his problems during 2025. In an interview with Moto.it, Melandri explained that Bagnaia overly relied on Marquez’s input when making setup requests, rather than trusting his own instincts.

Melandri stated,

“In my opinion, the problem was that Bagnaia based everything on Marquez; he was always looking at Marquez.”

He pointed out that after the first test in Malaysia, Bagnaia believed that their feedback and requests about the bike were aligned, whereas Marquez consistently focused on his own development path.

“If you remember, after the first test in Malaysia in February, Pecco said he was happy because the comments were the same, the requests about the bike were the same, while Marquez never considered Pecco. He always just went his own way, saying, ‘I’m at this point, I’m doing this, I have to improve here, I have to improve there.’”

Melandri added,

“When we got to Thailand for the tests, Marquez started to be fast, and Marquez was always thinking only about his own path. It’s true that he looks at everyone’s data to try to understand, but he doesn’t say it. Instead, Bagnaia, from the moment Ducati announced Marquez, has always talked and compared himself to Marquez.”

In my opinion, this was a mistake because he didn’t think enough about his feelings.

– Marco Melandri, Former MotoGP Rider

After the 2025 season ended, it became known that Marquez delegated some development choices of Ducati’s new GP26 bike to Bagnaia. However, Ducati likely limited Bagnaia’s control over the GP26’s evolution, recognizing Marquez’s expertise with the previous GP25 model.

Early Pre-Season Errors Highlighted by Gianluca Nannelli

Gianluca Nannelli, 2003 Italian Supersport champion, weighed in alongside Melandri by identifying what he considered Bagnaia’s greatest pre-season misstep. Nannelli argued that Bagnaia underestimated Marquez’s exceptional record and impact, which negatively influenced his approach to the 2025 season.

He remarked,

“For me, Pecco’s biggest mistake was at the start of the season, because he was world champion for two years, runner-up, and he attacked Marquez head-on. He said, ‘I’m on par with you,’ not considering that this guy has won eight world championships, with less than ideal means.”

Nannelli further explained,

“The error of judgment was Pecco’s, in not realising how strong that person who arrived in his garage was. Perhaps he could have handled things differently, collaborating and trying to immediately glean some secrets or something to stay on that train.”

The Missed Duel That Fans Expected and Future Prospects for Bagnaia

The 2025 MotoGP season left fans feeling deprived of a thrilling championship battle between Bagnaia and Marquez, as the Italian rider was unable to adapt effectively to the GP25 bike and Marquez’s competitive resurgence. Bagnaia’s opportunities to rebound remain, but his future with Ducati appears uncertain amid the manufacturer’s growing interest in younger talent like Pedro Acosta.

How Bagnaia will respond in the upcoming season will be closely watched, especially as Ducati navigates its rider lineup and development focus. Whether Bagnaia can regain his form or whether Marquez will further assert his influence on the Ducati program will shape the championship landscape moving forward.
