Oscar Piastri entered the Formula 1 scene in 2023, quickly gaining recognition for his unshaken demeanor amid the intense pressures of racing. At just 24 years old, with a background marked by a composed mindset and careful focus, Piastri’s “calm rise” has become a defining aspect of his reputation within the sport. His journey from Australia to the global F1 stage reveals the dedication and resilience that have shaped his path so far.
Early Years and the Foundation at Haileybury School
Piastri’s journey was far from ordinary, beginning with a major move from Melbourne to the United Kingdom when he was 14 years old. He enrolled at Haileybury School, a small town boarding school in Hertfordshire known for fostering sporting talent, including the legendary Stirling Moss. This transition involved adapting to a new culture and lifestyle far away from the bustling Australian city of five million people.
Andy Searson, Director of Sport at Haileybury and Piastri’s former teacher, recalls the driver’s exceptional maturity during these formative years. Despite undergoing the typical challenges of adolescence, Piastri remained remarkably focused and grounded.
“The impression you get of him as reserved, calm and composed isn’t a façade at all – that’s him in a nutshell,”
Andy explained.
His parents, especially his father, supported him by spending time in Europe during critical stages of his adjustment, ensuring he wasn’t isolated. Throughout his four years at Haileybury, Piastri balanced intense academic commitments with his burgeoning motorsport career, maintaining his schoolwork even when competing in karting events across Europe.

A Mature Focus and Balanced Life
Andy Searson highlighted Piastri’s unique internal drive, which differs from the fiery intensity often associated with elite competitors.
“He’s astonishingly composed, with immense drive inside, but it’s not the kind you usually see in other drivers or elite sportspeople. It’s not heart-on-the-sleeve stuff,”
he said. Piastri’s approach came with humility and steadiness rather than showiness or swagger.
While many teenagers struggle to stay grounded amid distractions, Piastri never wavered in his dedication. Even after exhilarating weekends at racing circuits or winning key karting races, he returned to his schoolwork with the same concentration.
“He has an ability to keep a lot of balls in the air and a huge bandwidth for taking on information and processing it appropriately, all underpinned by a real calmness within himself,”
Andy added.
This intellectual discipline, combined with physical training provided by Haileybury’s excellent strength and conditioning programs, laid the groundwork for his later achievements. Though the school did not offer a dedicated motorsport curriculum, its flexibility and support systems helped him stay fit and mentally prepared for racing demands in Europe.
Cricket: Piastri’s First Sporting Passion
Surprisingly to many, cricket was Piastri’s first sporting love. Andy remarked on his genuine enthusiasm:
“Cricket is his absolute passion. I wouldn’t be surprised if he said it was his first love ahead of driving. He absolutely loved it.”
Piastri’s connection to cricket remained alive even after he embarked on his racing career. In the Australian off-season, he often returned home to Melbourne and attended cricket matches at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, including the prestigious Fourth Ashes Test.
His affection for the sport extended beyond spectating. As a young player, he bowled with determination and energy, participating in the school’s third XI. Such involvement in team sports likely contributed to his calm and grounded personality, traits that have aided his racing success.
Humility in a High-Pressure World
In a world where ego can often dominate, Piastri’s humility stands out distinctly. Andy emphasized how the driver never flaunted his achievements:
“He was super humble. As far as I’m aware, he never came back from a weekend racing and bragged to his mates about what he’d been doing. Everyone knew what he was achieving – the other lads weren’t daft – but he certainly wasn’t strutting around flashing his credentials.”
This modesty and measured character have earned him positive recognition among peers and teachers alike.
“Staff, adults and teenagers alike – I doubt you’d find anyone who would say a negative word about him. And he did it all in a completely non-flashy way,”
Andy added, highlighting how Piastri’s calm charisma made him a “galvaniser” among young people around him.
Rapid Progression Through Motorsport Ranks
Oscar Piastri’s speed of ascent in motorsport has been striking. His rookie Formula 1 season score of 97 points was the second-highest ever at the time. He achieved his first two Grand Prix victories in his second season and quickly established himself as a contender for the championship by his third year. Even Max Verstappen, known for his rapid rise, was not battling for top honours in his third season as Piastri was.
Andy reflected on the predictability of Piastri’s success:
“I was intrigued by how surprised you said you were at his progress, because those of us who knew him beforehand were perhaps less surprised. More than anything, what Oscar has done has inspired pupils across a number of sports – and beyond sport, just in life. His ability to reach the very top is hugely inspiring.”
This inspiring trajectory serves as a powerful example for current students at Haileybury, many of whom look to Piastri’s achievements as proof of what dedication and focus can accomplish.
The Role of Haileybury and Its Support System
Haileybury School’s reputation for nurturing sporting talent and helping students balance academic and athletic commitments played a vital role in Piastri’s development. The school supports a variety of sports with expert coaching staff, strength training, and personalized educational mentoring. In Piastri’s case, his tutor relationship was crucial for managing his workload and planning for his future beyond racing.
Andy explained,
“Every pupil has a tutor, and his relationship with his tutor was particularly important — not just for keeping on top of work, but also for thinking about future choices and having a plan B. That worked extremely well for him. He never dropped anything, stayed on top of it all, and came away with excellent GCSEs and A-levels.”
Although Haileybury does not provide a specific drivers’ program, its flexible approach helped accommodate Piastri’s rigorous racing schedule across Europe.
An Icon for Future Generations
Oscar Piastri’s story resonates beyond motorsport, showcasing how grounded ambition and humility can fuel remarkable success. Andy Searson highlighted this significance for young people:
“It’s powerful for pupils to sit there and think, ‘you’re literally sitting in the chair Oscar sat in four years ago.’”
The driver’s composed character and work ethic embody qualities that many aspire to, making him a role model.
“He’s the epitome of what’s possible, and of what old Haileyburians can and should aspire to be – and many, many of them already are,”
Andy said.
As Piastri faces the challenge of bouncing back from the difficulties encountered in the latter part of the 2025 season, those who witnessed his early years believe he is equipped to overcome setbacks and continue his ascent. His story promises to inspire a new generation of athletes and students, both on and off the track, in Australia, the UK, and across the globe.
