ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The 2026 IndyCar Series season began Saturday amidst great anticipation on a demanding 1.8-mile, 14-turn street course weaving through the downtown streets of St. Petersburg and along the runway at Albert Whitted Airport. The season kickoff carried high expectations as drivers and teams aimed to establish early momentum critical for championship success.
Santino Ferrucci, one of the series’ prominent drivers, emphasized the importance of endurance and a strong start during this initial challenge of the IndyCar 2026 season kickoff.
“I just woke up, ton of energy this morning, ready to go. It’s one of those things to where you’re really excited to kick off the season, especially in a great place like here in Florida, so yeah, excited to see what we can do today,”
Ferrucci said.
Intensity Grows Among Drivers and Teams at the Start
The circuit’s demanding layout created a test of skill and strategy for all competitors, as cars zipped through tight downtown streets and traversed part of the Albert Whitted Airport’s runway. Drivers from across the globe brought their focus and determination to the race, fully aware that a solid start here could influence their championship bids throughout March and beyond.
Kim Green, co-owner of Green Savoree Racing Promotions, highlighted the eagerness shared by drivers and teams alike ahead of the first race.
“They want to do well. They want [to] start their season well. If they can launch this weekend and today well for the start of their race season. It’s a good steppingstone to get going for the championship,”
Green remarked.
Collaboration Behind the Scenes Is Key to Success
Beyond drivers’ performances, success in the IndyCar season depends heavily on the coordinated efforts of the entire team. Green stressed that the right people make the difference — from the drivers and crews handling pit stops to engineers and strategists managing car setup and race tactics.

“It’s about people. You’ve got to have the right people. The driver, for sure, super important. Then all the crew that go around and prepare the race cars, do the pit stops, the engineers that help work on the setup of the car and the strategy. It takes a really, really good team. And you’ve really got to be dedicated,”
Green explained.
Survival and Momentum Define Early Season Goals
For many drivers, simply finishing the race cleanly is an achievement, given the physical and technical challenges posed by the circuit. Ferrucci captured this mindset succinctly:
“So if we can survive today and just kind of get through it, we’re going to have a good result. And that’s going to be monumental for us to go through the first few races here in March.”
The ability to withstand these opening challenges often sets the tone for a driver’s championship trajectory.
Green also pointed out the pivotal role that a victory or strong placement in St. Petersburg can play.
“I think if you can win in St Pete, you’re in the right position to really start building points for the championship,”
she said.
High Energy Signals Promising Season Ahead
The enthusiasm radiating from the fans, drivers, and team owners underscores the significance of this event. Ferrucci summed up the collective feeling with genuine excitement, stating,
“For a race like today, I’m just more excited than anything else.”
As the 2026 IndyCar season rolls forward from this dynamic start in St. Pete, the results of these opening contests will likely influence the competitive landscape and championship battles in the months to come.
