Red Bull Racing has promoted Isack Hadjar from their sister team, Racing Bulls, to their main Formula 1 lineup for the 2026 season, replacing Yuki Tsunoda. The 21-year-old French driver earned this significant opportunity after a promising rookie year in 2025, which included his first podium finish and a consistent qualifying performance, making him a rising talent within the Red Bull stable.
Hadjar secured his inaugural F1 podium by finishing third at the 2025 Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort, where he also achieved his best qualifying position of fourth. Known as a qualifying specialist during his time with Racing Bulls, the Parisian driver reached Q3 in 16 out of 24 races last year, showing clear speed and consistency. Red Bull’s team principal Laurent Mekies commended Hadjar’s dedication both on and off the track, noting his relocation to England and frequent presence at the team’s Milton Keynes headquarters as signs of his commitment.
Ensuring the Right Environment for Hadjar to Manage Expectations
While Isack Hadjar has demonstrated tremendous promise, Mekies emphasizes that the real challenge lies in handling the pressure that comes with being part of a top-tier team like Red Bull. The team insists it is crucial to provide the right support system to help Hadjar thrive amid high expectations, especially as he prepares to race alongside four-time world champion Max Verstappen.

Despite some setbacks during pre-season testing, including a crash at the Barcelona shakedown and lost track time in Bahrain due to hydraulic issues, Mekies described Hadjar as “very good, smiling and calm” ahead of his debut at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne on March 8. Mekies shared with Motorsport.com,
“So far, he’s done everything right – demonstrating the right approach in terms of commitment and personality. He moved to England immediately, is at the Milton Keynes headquarters every two days, and is working closely with the team.”
Then it will be up to us to create the right environment around him when the pressure and expectations arrive, but he has the personality and preparation to do a good job.

Hadjar’s Adaptation to Red Bull’s Car and the Challenge Ahead
During the Bahrain winter testing, Hadjar began adjusting to Red Bull’s 2026 car and its unique power unit. The new Red Bull-Ford engine showed promising energy harvesting and deployment capabilities, which require a precise and high-revving driving style similar to Verstappen’s approach. This adaptation phase is critical for Hadjar to establish himself as a competitive driver within the leading team.
However, Hadjar faces the significant task of not only adapting but also delivering results under pressure. Red Bull has shown it will not hesitate to make changes if expectations are not met, as seen with the replacement of Sergio Perez by Liam Lawson in 2025. Perez struggled during his 2024 season, scoring only 152 points out of the team’s total 589, while Lawson failed to score points in his limited appearances. Tsunoda also managed just 31 points across 22 races, highlighting the demanding nature of this team’s environment for drivers.
Hadjar’s entry coincides with the launch of new regulations in 2026, which could offer a fresh start. Nonetheless, Mekies and Red Bull know that the potential advantage will be irrelevant if Hadjar cannot maintain composure and focus under the intense scrutiny and expectations of fighting at the front.
Looking Forward to a Defining Season for Hadjar
Isack Hadjar’s promotion to Red Bull’s top flight is a pivotal moment for his career, marking his transition into one of the most competitive seats on the Formula 1 grid. His track record as a qualifying specialist and the resilience he displayed during his rookie campaign reflect his ability to perform at a high level. However, the 2026 season will be the ultimate test for Hadjar to demonstrate that he can shoulder the pressure that comes with racing for a team renowned for demanding excellence and championship success.
How Hadjar navigates this environment alongside Max Verstappen will influence Red Bull’s driver hierarchy and could shape the team’s championship prospects. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely as the young Frenchman begins his journey in Melbourne, with the challenges of high expectations and the intensity of top-level Formula 1 racing awaiting him.
