Jimmie Johnson has announced that he plans to compete in his last NASCAR Cup Series race at the Daytona 500 in 2027, concluding an illustrious career at Daytona International Speedway. The seven-time Cup Series champion and two-time Daytona 500 winner aims to return to the track with Legacy Motor Club to close this chapter in his racing journey.
Recent Returns and Interest from NASCAR Veterans
Two of NASCAR’s most celebrated drivers, Tony Stewart and Jimmie Johnson, have expressed interest in racing again at Daytona, though their paths differ. Stewart, who last raced in NASCAR in 2016, took to the Truck Series at Daytona last Friday night for the first time in two decades. Despite being involved in an early wreck, Stewart’s experience renewed his desire to compete again in future NASCAR events.
“I’d say there is a good shot of that.”

While Stewart’s return to the NASCAR Cup Series appears unlikely given his current age of 54, Johnson is actively racing this season. He will participate in the Daytona 500 set for this Sunday and will also compete in the upcoming San Diego street race held at the Coronado Naval Base later this year.
Johnson’s 2027 Farewell at the Daytona 500
Looking ahead to the 2027 NASCAR season, Johnson revealed he will take the wheel of a fourth Legacy Motor Club car at the Daytona 500, marking his final Cup Series race. The team will field three chartered cars next season, with Johnson’s entry adding a special element to this historic race.

Johnson, turning 51 in September, has left an undeniable mark on NASCAR history, with his first Daytona 500 victory occurring 20 years ago. His recent performance includes a strong third-place finish behind William Byron and Tyler Reddick in the season-opening Cup Series race.
The 2027 Daytona 500 Poised for Historic Significance
The upcoming 2027 Daytona 500 stands to be especially memorable, not only because of Johnson’s planned farewell but also due to the potential final appearance of Hall of Famer Denny Hamlin behind the wheel of the No. 11 car. These factors could lead to higher interest and ticket demand for the marquee event at Daytona International Speedway than seen in recent years.
"I'd say there is a good shot of that," Tony Stewart replies when team says they hope he comes back to race again.
