Jimmie Johnson Sets 2027 Daytona 500 as Final NASCAR Race

Jimmie Johnson, the seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion, has declared that the 2027 Daytona 500 will mark the final race of his distinguished career. This announcement came on Saturday, setting a significant date for fans eager to witness his last start in the premier NASCAR event.

Johnson initially stepped away from full-time Cup Series competition with Hendrick Motorsports after the conclusion of the 2020 season. Over a career spanning 19 years, he amassed 83 Cup victories along with seven championship titles. After leaving full-time racing, Johnson pursued other motorsport challenges including competing in the IndyCar Series and later returned to NASCAR as an owner of Legacy Motor Club.

Racing Focus and Recent Performances

Since transitioning to part-time racing under his own team, Johnson’s results have not matched his earlier success with Hendrick Motorsports. Notably, his standout performance was a third-place finish in last year’s Daytona 500, a race that reignited enthusiasm among NASCAR supporters across the globe.

Johnson explained,

“Next February, I’ll make my final start in the Cup Series at Daytona,”

referring to his upcoming farewell race.

“I’ve been very fortunate to accomplish more than I ever imagined in this sport.”

He further remarked on his recent years, saying,

“The last six years have given me the freedom to choose where I compete and more importantly, the clarity to understand where I’m needed most. It’s time to focus my energy on building a world class and unrivaled organization in LEGACY MOTOR CLUB.”

Commitment to Legacy Motor Club and Future Involvement

While retiring from full-time NASCAR Cup Series competition, Johnson intends to dedicate himself fully to his role as team owner.

“As a team owner, I need to be on the sidelines on race day supporting our drivers and crews on the competition side and cultivating relationships that are crucial to the long-term growth of the CLUB,”

he said.

“I also want to take the time to celebrate with fans throughout the season to show how grateful I am for their support throughout my career.”

In the meantime, Johnson plans to continue racing selectively, focusing on tracks that offer the best chances of success, including super-speedways and unique venues. He is scheduled to race at Daytona this weekend and has a planned appearance at San Diego later in the season.

Reflecting on his return to competition, Johnson noted,

“Even if you’ve been away for a while, you can come back and work your way through the duels, get some drafting time, and find that sweet spot and be competitive. The half-mile tracks, a mile and a half, it’s really tough. If you’re not in these cars all the time, and deeply rooted in the process, to have a shot to win is unrealistic.”

Anticipation and Impact of Johnson’s Final NASCAR Run

Though it remains uncertain whether Johnson will secure another victory before stepping away, his presence in upcoming races is highly anticipated by NASCAR fans. His announcement generates both excitement and reflection on a career marked by extraordinary achievements.

Johnson’s decision to retire after the 2027 Daytona 500 underscores a shift from active driver to committed team owner, focusing on establishing Legacy Motor Club as a dominant force in racing. His ongoing engagement ensures that his influence within the sport will persist well beyond his final lap as a competitor.
