Jimmie Johnson Teams with $24B Partner to Revive NASCAR Icon

Seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson has succeeded in bringing IndyCar legend Dario Franchitti back into NASCAR, announcing that Franchitti will race in the Craftsman Truck Series race on the St. Petersburg street circuit in Florida on February 28. This collaboration involves Johnson’s Cup Series team, Legacy Motor Club, and the Truck Series team Tricon Garage, marking a significant return for Franchitti to NASCAR competition.

Franchitti’s Return and Previous NASCAR Experience

Dario Franchitti, a four-time IndyCar champion and three-time Indianapolis 500 winner, last competed full-time over a decade ago but will now pilot Tricon Garage’s No. 1 Toyota truck during the upcoming event. Franchitti has only one prior Truck Series start, finishing 33rd at Martinsville Speedway with Cunningham Motorsports. His NASCAR racing history also includes limited starts in both the Cup Series and O’Reilly Auto Parts Series from 2007 to 2008, though he did not secure top finishes during that tenure.

In his earlier NASCAR career, Franchitti’s best results were 22nd at Martinsville in the Cup Series and fifth at Watkins Glen in the O’Reilly Series, demonstrating respectable performances despite limited opportunities.

The Unique Challenge of Street Circuit Racing

Franchitti expressed enthusiasm for competing on a street course, highlighting the complexity of racing a NASCAR truck on a layout that combines airport tarmac and city streets with varying surfaces and bumps. He remarked,

“The thought of racing a NASCAR truck on a street circuit is really intriguing to me. The different surfaces, the fact that part of it is on an airport, then you go into the streets, the different bumps all those things you got to try and master. This was just the chance to race on a circuit that I love, and a chance to do something fun.”

He credits his reunion with NASCAR and this opportunity to Johnson and his team at Legacy Motor Club, adding,

“This all stemmed from a conversation with Jimmie Johnson. For me, with the opportunity to race the truck, it was really him, it was the whole team that he has there [at Legacy] that made it all happen.”

“His relationship with Toyota, Dollar Tree coming on a sponsor — it’s all been through Jimmie and the team at Legacy. If it goes well, great. If it doesn’t go well, I am going to be blaming Jimmie.” – Dario Franchitti

Jimmie Johnson Welcomes Dollar Tree’s Backing

Johnson emphasized the importance of Dollar Tree’s sponsorship in making this venture possible. Dollar Tree, valued at nearly $24 billion, will support the racing effort, bringing substantial resources to the partnership. Johnson reflected on their collaboration, saying,

“Dario and I had been talking for a long time about the chance to race together, so when he approached me about St. Petersburg, I knew I had to get to work.”

He continued,

“I called him back a day later with an incredible opportunity to join a championship-winning team with Toyota and the great people at Tricon. It’s been a lot of fun getting him integrated into the team and spending more time together, going through the process of getting him back to racing.”

“I’m so excited it all came together and thankful that Dollar Tree is going to support. I am looking forward to sitting on the pit box alongside the team and sharing this experience with Dario.” – Jimmie Johnson

Anticipating the Impact of This Partnership on NASCAR

The collaboration between Johnson, Franchitti, and major partners like Toyota and Dollar Tree highlights a renewed spirit in NASCAR’s outreach and innovation, particularly as the Truck Series ventures onto the challenging St. Petersburg street circuit for the first time. Franchitti’s participation adds star power and broadens the appeal of NASCAR’s lower-tier series, potentially drawing in fans of open-wheel racing. Johnson’s leadership and legacy in NASCAR combined with Franchitti’s established racing pedigree provide a promising mix for success.

This partnership is also expected to strengthen Legacy Motor Club and Tricon Garage’s presence in the Truck Series as they leverage this season opener to build momentum. The unique blend of experienced drivers and robust sponsorship could influence how NASCAR continues to attract talent and invest in exciting race formats moving forward.
