Jimmie Johnson to Race Final NASCAR at 2027 Daytona 500

Seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson revealed on Saturday that the 2027 Daytona 500 will mark the conclusion of his illustrious racing career. The 83-time race winner plans to take part in selected events over the next two years before retiring at NASCAR’s most prestigious event, delivering a long-awaited farewell to fans and the sport.

Johnson’s announcement comes after a delayed sendoff caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Hailing from California and inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2024, he shares the record for the most Cup Series championships in history alongside Dale Earnhardt and Richard Petty.

Next February, I’ll make my final start in the Cup Series in Daytona,

Johnson said.

I’ve been very fortunate to accomplish more than I ever imagined in this sport. It’s just time to focus my energy on building a world class organization in LEGACY MOTOR CLUB.

Progressing from Driving to Team Leadership

After stepping away from full-time racing in 2020, Johnson ventured into IndyCar for two seasons before becoming co-owner of LEGACY MOTOR CLUB in 2022. He resumed part-time NASCAR competition in 2023, selecting races strategically while dedicating effort to growing his team.

This announcement highlights Johnson’s shift from driver to entrepreneur, emphasizing his commitment to developing LEGACY MOTOR CLUB into a championship contender. He aims to devote his full attention to team ownership, rather than balancing it with driving duties.

Johnson’s distinctive No. 84 Legacy Motor Club vehicle symbolizes this transition from competitor to executive.

As a team owner, I need to be on the sidelines supporting our drivers and crews,

Johnson explained.

I also want to take the time to celebrate with fans throughout the season to show how grateful I am for their support.

Planned Events Leading Up to the Final Race

Johnson will participate in two NASCAR races in 2026: the upcoming Daytona 500, where he will start 31st in the No. 84 car, and the NASCAR San Diego Weekend at Naval Base Coronado. His final appearance will be the 2027 Daytona 500, held at Daytona International Speedway, widely regarded as the World Center of Racing.

To honor Johnson’s extraordinary achievements, LEGACY MOTOR CLUB intends to host special fan engagement events, promote merchandise, and arrange appearances throughout the farewell period. The team’s goal is to provide the celebration Johnson missed due to the pandemic’s restrictions.

Although Johnson’s NASCAR Cup Series driving career will end in 2027, he remains open to participating in other forms of racing. His primary focus will shift toward elevating LEGACY MOTOR CLUB into a top-tier racing operation while maintaining his strong ties to the sport.

The 2027 Daytona 500 is set to be a memorable farewell, offering fans two full years to celebrate the impact of a driver who redefined excellence in stock car racing.
