Johann Zarco: Honda Bike Shows Promise at Sepang Test Day 1

Johann Zarco marked his return to MotoGP testing after a two-month winter break on the first day of the Sepang Test. Unlike teammate Diogo Moreira, who had already taken part in shakedown sessions and warmed up on a standard CBR 1000 in Cartagena, Zarco faced this test day as his first true comeback to competitive riding in 2024.

Early Progress Demonstrated By Honda Riders

From the morning session, Honda’s improved bike performance was evident. Luca Marini secured the second-fastest lap, sitting just behind Alex Marquez, while Zarco’s Castrol Honda LCR machine placed him in eighth position, only slightly over a second behind the leader and just behind Joan Mir. This early showing reinforced the growing potential of the Honda package at Sepang.

Afternoon Session: Zarco Maintains Consistent Pace Despite Slight Slip

During the afternoon runs, Johann Zarco briefly entered the Top 3 overall but ultimately finished tenth with a gap of 1.122 seconds to the fastest rider, Marc Marquez. By the end of the day, Zarco ranked 11th, completing a solid 60 laps and showcasing consistent lap times despite the challenges of returning to full race rhythm after the off-season.

Zarco Reflects on Bike’s Performance and His Own Comfort Level

The experienced rider recognizes that the Honda RC213V is competitive and displays promising signs of advancement, although he feels he must build more confidence before pushing his pace further. Zarco explained,

“The bike is competitive and, with the new tire, the lap times are solid. I’m satisfied; today’s feeling confirms that the bike is good, but I’m not completely happy yet. I haven’t yet found the level of comfort needed to really enjoy riding. There’s still work to be done to find the perfect feeling and fully exploit my potential. Even though it wasn’t my best day, there are positives, so we’ll see tomorrow.” ?Johann Zarco, Rider

Despite some unease, Zarco and his team have maintained a focused and methodical approach to testing, aiming to continue refining the bike’s behavior and his own confidence as the sessions progress.

What Zarco’s Performance Means for the Upcoming Season

Zarco’s performance during the Sepang Test Day 1 offers hopeful signs that the Honda bike is on the right development path. The promising speed and stability displayed could translate into stronger race results if further progress is made. As the test continues over the next days, Zarco’s ability to build comfort and consistency on the RC213V will be key to enhancing his competitiveness in MotoGP’s demanding 2024 calendar.
