Jorge Martin Rises in Thai MotoGP, Eyes Victory Fight Soon

Jorge Martin delivered a notable performance at the recent Thai MotoGP race in Buriram, finishing fourth and signaling a swift return to form after a challenging period. Although Marco Bezzecchi claimed victory, Martin’s strong showing on his Aprilia, having limited pre-season preparation due to surgery recovery, demonstrated his growing competitiveness and determination in the championship.

Overcoming Injury and Limited Testing Before the Season

The former world champion’s 2024 campaign began under difficult circumstances, with only two days of testing following surgery for multiple injuries sustained last year. Despite these setbacks, Martin described his race weekend as nearly perfect, rating his performance a “9 out of 10.” He was actively fighting on track against prominent riders such as Marc Marquez and Pedro Acosta before securing his finish just seconds behind teammate Raul Fernandez’s Trackhouse Aprilia.

Regaining Confidence and Form on the RS-GP

For Martin, the Thai GP represented more than just solid points; it was a return to feeling physically and mentally like his former self on the bike.

“the same as I used to be”

he reflected after the race. Martin explained,

“At the beginning of the grand prix, I was feeling super good. I was fighting again with Marc and with Pedro. I felt again, I’m the same as I used to be.”

While acknowledging room for setup improvements to chase Bezzecchi and the frontrunners, he emphasized the closeness of competition, stating that the podium was within reach.

Progress and Adaptation Throughout the Weekend

Martin’s progress was a major theme of the weekend. After struggling to finish even a Sprint race at the season opener, he noted significant advancements in his fitness and riding adaptation.

“I’m much closer [to full fitness] than I expected, actually,”

he said, reflecting on his physical recovery. Completing 26 laps in the main race was challenging, but manageable compared to previous efforts.

He also focused on mastering the Aprilia RS-GP’s characteristics, admitting that each lap brought a deeper understanding of his weaknesses and areas to improve.

“Today, I did another step. I think there will be other races where I will feel better, some where I will struggle. But overall, the bike is working really, really good for me.”

Looking Ahead: From Adaptation to Attack

Martin’s goal remains to establish a riding base that allows him to push hard in every race, reducing the need to adjust constantly to the bike’s style.

“So as soon as I can attack as I want, I will make another small step, and this small step will bring me to the fight for victory.”

His optimism reflects a commitment not only to recover fully but to contend regularly for top honors in MotoGP.

Strong Early Championship Position and Future Prospects

Following his best weekend on the RS-GP so far, Martin sits fourth in the early 2024 MotoGP standings. Marco Bezzecchi holds second place despite a crash from the lead during the Sprint race, while Pedro Acosta leads the championship. Jorge Martin’s trajectory suggests he will soon join the frontrunners battling for wins, making him a key figure to watch as the season progresses across various circuits.
