Josef Newgarden, the most recent winner on an oval track, continued his strong form by capturing victory at the Phoenix oval in only the second round of the 2026 IndyCar season. Starting from the outside of the front row, Newgarden stayed near the front throughout the race, then made a critical decision under the final caution with 42 laps remaining, opting to pit and take advantage of an alternative strategy that ultimately led to his triumph.
Key Moves During Final Stage Propel Newgarden Past Rivals
During the late stages, both Newgarden and Arrow McLaren’s Pato O’Ward pitted. While O’Ward managed to climb back to fourth place, Newgarden drove even more aggressively, overtaking O’Ward and then catching the race leader Kyle Kirkwood of Andretti Global with just seven laps left. The Floridian’s calculated risk paid off as he took the lead and secured the Phoenix victory, while Kirkwood settled for second place in the championship standings behind him. David Malukas, in his first career pole position with Team Penske, completed the podium by finishing third.
Race Leader Rasmussen’s Bid to Defend Victory Ends in Collision
Christian Rasmussen of ECR led for a large portion of the event and seemed poised to claim his second consecutive short oval win after success in Milwaukee last year. His chances were derailed when he made contact with Will Power, triggering a caution with 42 laps left. Despite maintaining the lead at the restart, Rasmussen’s race unraveled after hitting the outside wall twice, finishing the day in 14th place.

Crashes and Mechanical Issues Impact Several Contenders
Álex Palou, the three-time defending champion and championship leader coming off his St. Petersburg victory, suffered an early exit after colliding with the wall following contact with Rinus VeeKay of Juncos Hollinger Racing, completing only 22 laps. Meanwhile, Romain Grosjean faced a harsh setback as a mechanical problem prevented him from even starting the race.
