Justin Haley Opens Up After Shocking Spire Motorsports Departure

Justin Haley made history by securing Spire Motorsports’ first Cup Series victory in 2019, significantly raising the team’s profile. He drove the organization’s No. 7 Chevrolet through the 2025 season, finishing 31st in the final driver standings. However, Spire Motorsports decided not to renew his contract for the 2026 Cup Series season, a move that surprised Haley.

Mid-Season Challenges and Persistent Performance

During the 2025 season, Haley faced upheaval when his championship-winning crew chief, Rodney Childers, left after nine races. Despite this setback and an unsettled environment, Haley managed to earn one top-five finish and two top-10s, demonstrating resilience and determination under pressure. Still, the competitive nature of the Cup Series left little room for error, and Haley acknowledged the difficulty of achieving consistent success amid those harsh margins.

Reaction to the Seat Change and Career Considerations

When Spire announced that Daniel Suarez would take over the No. 7 ride for 2026, Haley admitted the decision caught him off guard. Reflecting on the situation, he shared his thoughts with NASCAR, stating,

“I really wasn’t expecting it. You take a step back, and I had a lot of options and a lot of people that called me. Being with Matt Kaulig and Kaulig Racing for so long, having to leave to try to keep my career going was a tough decision. Business is a big part of racing.”

Haley emphasized that throughout the season, he left no effort unused to perform at his best, attending every race committed to maximizing results. Even though the outcomes sometimes fell short, he believed he competed at the peak of his abilities during a challenging year.

Returning to Kaulig Racing and New Opportunities

Now, Haley has returned to Kaulig Racing, his prior team, signaling a fresh chapter just over two years after parting ways. This second stint comes as Kaulig embarks on an ambitious entry into the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series with Ram’s comeback. Chris Rice, Kaulig Racing’s CEO, praised Haley for elevating their Cup program since becoming their first full-time driver in 2022.

Haley will serve as the lead driver for Kaulig’s Truck Series debut, a role demanding not only speed but strong leadership to guide the new effort. Though his immediate focus is on the Truck Series, Haley has yet to close the door on a future return to the Cup Series, understanding that such a comeback requires patience and strategic timing.

Life Beyond the Track and Career Achievements

Off the track, Haley’s perspectives have shifted as he embraces family life and reevaluates his priorities. He continues to pursue competitive racing in other forms, spending recent weeks driving a dirt modified at Volusia Speedway Park. Despite losing his full-time Cup ride, his career achievements remain impressive.

Since winning the ARCA East championship in 2016, Haley has competed in 338 national series races, accumulating achievements including one Cup win, four Xfinity victories, and three Truck Series triumphs. Only 40 drivers have accomplished a similar set of wins, a testament to his versatility and skill.

Within motorsports circles, Haley is recognized for his discipline and ability to protect equipment, qualities valued by teams and sponsors alike, which should help sustain his presence in the sport.
