KTM Chief Warns Ducati: Pedro Acosta Struggles Under Pressure

Pedro Acosta is reportedly set to join Ducati as a factory rider for the 2027 MotoGP season, stirring concern within KTM and beyond about his ability to manage pressure. The 21-year-old Spaniard’s upcoming switch has raised questions about whether he can meet the high expectations that come with racing for one of MotoGP’s top teams.

Though the 2026 campaign has yet to begin, the rider market for the following season is already active. Rumors suggest Acosta has committed to Ducati, which would place him alongside current star Francesco Bagnaia, posing significant implications for the Italian rider’s future with the team.

KTM’s Aki Ajo Highlights Acosta’s Previous Difficulties with Pressure

At KTM’s 2026 MotoGP season launch, team manager Aki Ajo addressed Acosta’s struggles under pressure, recalling a time when the young rider found Ajo’s strict guidance emotionally overwhelming. Ajo remarked that although he never intended to be excessively harsh, he was firm during Acosta’s Moto3 and Moto2 years.

He explained that Acosta experienced notable challenges with pressure early in 2025, warranting motivational discussions to support him.

“He couldn’t concentrate or, at least, not on the right things. In my opinion, communication is essential for managing the situation. Even tears can be a way to control emotions,”

Ajo said.

This candid admission raises concerns about how Acosta will cope with the intense demands Ducati places on its riders, a team well known for maintaining relentless performance standards. Former Ducati rider Jack Miller has spoken about the intense pressure at Borgo Panigale, famously calling it something he does not miss, highlighting the challenge Acosta could face.

Francesco Bagnaia’s Struggles Amplify Pressure Surrounding Acosta’s Arrival

Francesco Bagnaia, Acosta’s potential future teammate, is currently enduring a difficult period with Ducati, making Acosta’s pressure to succeed even more critical. Bagnaia’s performance regressions during the 2025 season have been widely scrutinized, threatening his position despite being a two-time world champion.

With rumors positioning Acosta as Bagnaia’s possible successor, the Italian rider’s case for retention appears increasingly uncertain. Veteran rider agent Carlo Pernat has voiced warnings to Bagnaia about the risk of ongoing difficulties in the new season, which could lead Ducati to rely more heavily on Acosta.

Implications for Ducati’s Future and Acosta’s Career Prospects

Pedro Acosta’s rumored signing by Ducati places both the rider and the team under a spotlight, as the factory squad expects top-tier performances under intense scrutiny. Acosta’s previous issues managing stress may prove a significant hurdle as he faces the demands of competing at the highest level in MotoGP.

The situation also puts pressure on Ducati’s management, including team figure Davide Tardozzi, who must decide if trusting Acosta fits their championship ambitions. The outcome of this transition could reshape Ducati’s rider lineup and influence the competitive dynamics of the MotoGP championship in coming years.
