Kyle Busch Faces Another Predicted Winless NASCAR Season

Kyle Busch, a two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion, continues to seek a return to winning after a prolonged dry spell that has lasted over two seasons. As the 2026 season approaches, skepticism grows around Busch’s ability to break this streak and secure a race victory, casting uncertainty over his future in the sport and within Richard Childress Racing (RCR).

Ongoing Challenges Cast Doubt on Busch’s Prospects in 2026

Despite coming close to winning several times recently, Kyle Busch has failed to reach Victory Lane since joining RCR, with his performance slipping down the standings. In both 2023 and 2024, Busch finished well outside the top 20, ending the latter season in 20th place and last season in 21st. Veteran NASCAR analyst Bob Pockrass expressed doubts regarding Busch’s chances of winning in the upcoming season, attributing some of the challenges to the team’s current rebuilding phase.

“Obviously, new crew chief with Jim Pullman, where is RCR going to be? I’ll say, no [race win], this year,”

Pockrass said on Beating and Banging.

“I was wrong last year. Maybe I’ll be wrong this year, but I don’t have as much faith this year as last year. I think it’s almost a little bit of rebuilding, and we’ll see how close they are,”

he added.

Busch’s contract with RCR runs through 2027, and Pockrass speculates a team change could be imminent, especially given that many drivers in the Cup Series lack contracts beyond that year. Alongside Busch, drivers Tyler Reddick and Alex Bowman will also face contract decisions that could reshape the competitive landscape.

“I think so. I certainly think so [that he could possibly leave RCR], and it could depend on where there are a lot of drivers more than half the field who don’t have contracts for 2027,”

Pockrass explained.

Busch’s Performance Decline Since Joining RCR

Kyle Busch enjoyed his most successful period while racing for Joe Gibbs Racing, capturing Cup Series titles in 2015 and 2019 and leading the series in victories during that time. However, after moving to Richard Childress Racing, the anticipated synergy did not materialize as hoped, and Busch’s results have steadily declined.

Although he managed three race wins in the first half of the 2023 season, Busch’s form sharply worsened over the latter part, plagued by mechanical issues and inconsistent pit stops that hampered his competitiveness.

Mark Martin Attributes Busch’s Troubles to Team Performance

Experienced driver Mark Martin has voiced strong opinions regarding the root of Busch’s difficulties, blaming the team rather than Busch himself. In a discussion with Charlie Marlow, Martin acknowledged RCR’s efforts but emphasized that their on-track performance fails to meet the standards needed for serious contention.

Martin noted that while Busch influences car setup and shares some responsibility for the outcomes, the strong correlation between equipment quality and results points to the team’s shortcomings as a central factor.

“Busch sits so far from the front now that he must overdrive every single time. Busch does it, too. But when he gets within reach of a top finish, the way he pushed his car proves too much,”

Martin said.

He stressed that Busch’s previous stints showed a driver capable of much higher performance levels. What Busch requires going forward is more reliable machinery and stronger team support to maximize his driving ability.

Future Outlook Hinges on Team Dynamics and Potential Moves

Kyle Busch’s career situation reflects broader challenges faced by multiple drivers and teams as contract uncertainty looms ahead of 2027. The upcoming decisions will influence the NASCAR Cup Series grid and could determine whether Busch can regain his winning form or if he must pursue new opportunities elsewhere.

While hope remains for a turnaround, the current indicators point to a difficult season ahead, with Busch striving to break free from a frustrating streak that has tested his perseverance and the capabilities of his racing team.
