Kyle Busch achieved his third consecutive victory at Atlanta’s EchoPark Speedway on Saturday afternoon, February 21, further extending his remarkable success in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. Racing in the No. 7 truck for Spire Motorsports, Busch had to fend off a competitive field that included several NASCAR Cup Series drivers, maintaining his lead as the clock wound down to the race’s concluding laps.
Weather delays pushed the start time to nearly 3 p.m. ET, and because the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series was scheduled later the same day, officials decided that at 4:20 p.m. ET the race would be limited to only two remaining laps regardless of the actual lap count. Though EchoPark Speedway is equipped with lighting, conditions forced the event to be cut short, eliminating about ten laps from the original schedule.
Key Moments and Driver Performances
Corey Heim, the reigning Truck Series champion, began strong in his season opener by winning the opening stage in the No. 1 TRICON Garage truck. The second stage saw Ben Rhodes contending for the win on his 29th birthday but running out of fuel just before the stage concluded, handing victory to Stewart Friesen. Friesen’s win marked a significant milestone, as it came during only his second race back following a severe crash at a Super DIRTcar Series event last July.
Rhodes dropped a lap but managed to recover later by securing the free pass in the final stage. The race featured just one caution due to a crash involving Cole Butcher and Dawson Sutton, when both trucks made heavy contact with the frontstretch wall after attempting to avoid other vehicles on the apron.
The competition for the lead intensified as the final laps approached, with drivers including Busch, Rhodes, Friesen, and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. exchanging positions throughout the race. When the time clock hit 4:20 p.m., Busch, aided by his teammate Carson Hocevar, held the top spot and crossed the finish line to claim his ninth career Truck Series victory at Atlanta and the 68th overall in his Truck Series career.
