Just before The Clash at Bowman Gray was set to take place, NASCAR driver Kyle Busch experienced a severe leg injury at his home, requiring 24 stitches. This unexpected incident, shared on the podcast Certified Oversharer, hosted by his wife Samantha Busch, disrupted Busch’s preparation for the upcoming season opener.
The race itself was delayed due to a harsh winter storm, which inadvertently provided a mixed blessing for Busch. While he was recovering at home, the storm also kept roads largely empty, a fortunate factor when seeking urgent medical care after the accident.
How Kyle Busch’s Injury Occurred at Home
The complication began when a smoke detector went off inside their home. Busch and Samantha urgently searched to locate the source, eventually pinpointing the alarm outside their son Brexton Busch’s room. Because the ceiling there was lower than usual, Kyle figured he could reach the detector with the help of a small stool.
“It’s a shorter ceiling than normal, so I’m like, ‘Man, I’m so close, I could almost reach it,’”
Kyle Busch recalled.
“I grab this little stool, it’s about a foot and a half tall, it’s about 18 inches tall, that’s all I need. So I put the stool down and I get up on the stool … and as I’m reaching up with my second arm, the stool explodes.”
The sudden collapse of the stool caused Busch to fall, but he initially did not realize the seriousness of his injury. It was only when Brexton alerted him that he was bleeding heavily that the gravity of the situation became clear.
“So Braxton comes out and is like, ‘Dad, you’re bleeding,’”
Samantha Busch said.
“As soon as he said, ‘You’re bleeding,’ I look down and I look,”
Kyle Busch added.
“And it’s not like you’re bleeding like a nosebleed. It is like pouring, like you’re gushing. I was instantly, I was like this is hospital grade. So now you’re driving, I’m in the front passenger seat with my leg propped up on the dash with more towels, the garage towels.”
Emergency Response and Medical Treatment
The severity of Busch’s wound necessitated immediate professional medical intervention. Thanks to the concurrent snowstorm, the emergency room was unusually quiet, allowing for prompt attention. Samantha said the staff initially planned for a physician assistant to handle the stitches but reconsidered when they learned the injured man was a professional driver.

“We got to the ER, I guess you could say luckily it was a snowstorm, so it was like a very quiet night at the ER,”
Samantha Busch explained.
“And she was like, ‘Oh sh*t, I don’t want to mess up his leg. When they lifted up his leg, they’re not kidding, like this flap was down and it was like gushing. So the doctor then came in and after they made sure there was no porcelain in your wound — and it missed your muscle by like barely.”
After thorough inspection and cleaning, Busch received 24 stitches to close the deep laceration. Remarkably, the injury did not affect any muscles, which Busch described with some relief.
“Just sliced the fat, folks,” he said with a smile. “Didn’t even get a muscle.”
The Injury’s Influence on Busch’s NASCAR Season Start
Despite the intensity and severity of the injury, Busch did not miss any racing time. The delayed Clash at Bowman Gray due to the winter storm gave him crucial extra recovery time. The combination of swift medical care and unexpected schedule shifts allowed Busch to stay on track for the NASCAR season opener.
