Hendrick Motorsports has announced that Justin Allgaier will serve as the replacement driver for Kyle Larson during select NASCAR Cup Series events, addressing the challenges of Larson’s busy schedule. Allgaier will be responsible for practicing and qualifying at the All-Star Race this weekend at North Wilkesboro, while Larson competes in Indianapolis. Additionally, Allgaier may also drive at the Coca-Cola 600 if necessary.
This arrangement allows Larson, the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series champion, to participate in both prestigious events, despite their close scheduling. If Larson qualifies among the top six in the Indy 500 Fast Six, he will be permitted to leave Indianapolis early to join the race in North Carolina, though this may cost him a favorable starting position at the Indy 500.
Because Larson has already secured multiple wins since the start of 2024, he automatically qualifies for the All-Star Race, bypassing the need to advance through the All-Star Open or rely on fan votes. This status helps ease some of the logistical pressure on his schedule.
Cliff Daniels, crew chief for Larson’s No. 5 team, expressed confidence in Allgaier’s ability to fill in seamlessly.
Daniels said. He added that Allgaier had previous experience with the track through simulator sessions and earlier testing, which helps prepare him for the demanding weekend ahead.

Daniels described their plan for handling track conditions as they evolve over the race weekend.
He emphasized the importance of driver comfort and communication, noting,
This strategic move ensures that Hendrick Motorsports maintains competitive performance during a complex schedule, reflecting the adaptability required in top-tier motorsports. Kyle Larson’s NASCAR Cup Series replacement arrangement highlights the teamwork and planning behind the scenes, while preserving Larson’s opportunity to compete at an elite level in multiple prestigious events. The collaboration could influence future approaches to managing drivers’ commitments, particularly when schedules overlap in the racing calendar.
