Kyle Larson’s 2026 Motivation: Chasing More NASCAR Titles

Kyle Larson revealed what fuels his determination heading into the 2026 NASCAR season following his recent championship win. After securing his second NASCAR Cup Series title at Phoenix, Larson is focused on seeing how many more championships he can claim before retiring.

Recap of Larson’s Career Milestone and Championship Victory

At last year’s race in Phoenix, the Hendrick Motorsports driver clinched his second Cup Series championship by narrowly defeating Denny Hamlin. This victory placed Larson among an elite group of only 18 drivers who have won multiple Cup Series titles over their careers. The 33-year-old racer has been steadily building his legacy with Hendrick Motorsports, aiming to add more honors to his record.

Shifting Motivation After Winning a Second Title

When asked about his motivation following the championship, Larson shared how his mindset evolved after winning his first title. Addressing Kevin Harvick, he said,

“I think I’ve got like the question throughout media day yesterday, ‘What’s the difference going from one to two?’”

He reflected on how the satisfaction of the first championship was unlike anything else. Larson explained,

“I’m so happy. I’m content. Like I’ve made it. I don’t care if I ever win another one again. I’m always going to be known as a Cup Series champion.”

New Goal: Accumulating More Wins and Championships

Despite feeling content, Larson admits that after claiming his second championship, his motivation shifted toward winning additional titles. He shared,

“And then once you win the second one, it’s like, ‘All right, like now I want more,’”

He described his ambition as an ongoing quest to see how much he can achieve before his career ends. Larson also emphasized his focus remains on the weekly preparation and execution rather than setting specific goals beforehand, saying,

“I just really try to go through the process each week of preparing to do a good job on the weekend. And if you’re doing everything you can and you’re doing all the small details right, those wins and results will take care of themselves.”

He concluded,

“But yeah, I would say maybe the motivation now is just to see how many wins and championships you can get before you’re done.”

Challenges Early in the 2026 Season and Accountability for Mistakes

Although motivated, Larson’s 2026 season started with setbacks. He currently ranks 21st in the standings with 42 points and recently took responsibility for causing a crash during the Autotrader 40 event in Atlanta. Reflecting on the incident, Larson admitted,

“I just messed up. I knew [Tyler Reddick] was inside of me at one point of the corner, but I got clear of him.

I didn’t quite realize that [Shane van Gisbergen] had gotten inside of him. I just hung a quick left and ran right into him. There was nothing anyone else did wrong; it was all on me. I hate it for this No. 5 Chevrolet team. I know we crashed, but I feel like we are still getting better and better when we come to drafting tracks, especially here at Atlanta.”
