Leclerc Claims Mercedes Sandbagging Huge in Bahrain Test

Charles Leclerc of Ferrari has suggested that Mercedes is deliberately hiding a significant amount of performance from their competitors during the initial 2026 Formula 1 pre-season testing in Bahrain. This first official three-day test, held recently, offered limited clarity as teams such as McLaren, Ferrari, and Mercedes showed promising pace under the new car regulations.

Teams Play Down Early Performance Amid Testing

Throughout the Friday sessions, several leading teams, including Red Bull, McLaren, and Mercedes, downplayed their current speed, frequently citing other teams as benchmarks for the early running. Despite accusations of sandbagging, Mercedes demonstrated strong pace, with drivers Andrea Kimi Antonelli and George Russell topping the timesheets on that day.

Leclerc’s Perspective on Competitors’ Strategies

When questioned by the official Formula 1 website about whether Mercedes and Red Bull were holding back their true performance, Charles Leclerc responded:

“I think Red Bull showed a little bit more than Mercedes, and they’ve been very impressive. I think Mercedes is hiding a massive amount. Only time will tell how much they’ve been hiding.”

Leclerc acknowledged that Red Bull has revealed more of its pace but insists Mercedes still possesses untapped speed yet to be unveiled.

Ferrari’s Solid Testing and Reliability

Ferrari also impressed during testing, placing third fastest on Friday with Lewis Hamilton behind the wheel. Hamilton experienced a stoppage near the end of the day, but Ferrari’s overall mileage and reliability were strong during the three days of running. Rumors circulated within the paddock that Ferrari had not replaced the power unit in Hamilton’s car since the previous shakedown in Barcelona, highlighting confidence in their setup and durability.

Leclerc Stays Grounded Despite Optimism

While Leclerc was positive about Ferrari’s reliability and performance in Bahrain, he maintained a cautious outlook on their true competitiveness. He noted that the complex new systems within the 2026 regulations provide teams with multiple opportunities to mask their actual pace, unlike previous seasons when fewer variables were available.

“Yeah, it’s only a feeling, though,”

he said regarding Ferrari’s strong showing.

“So, for now, I will stay cautious. If last year you only had two or three things to play with on the car to hide your potential, now maybe it’s 10 or 15, because these new systems, there are so many ways you can really hide your performance than in previous years. So, in terms of performance itself, it’s difficult to know. In terms of reliability, I think we’re looking good. That’s true and that is a positive.”

“But, at the end, performance – as much as reliability – is a very important thing we need to excel in and we don’t really know where we are for now.”

Implications for the 2026 Season

The early signs from the Bahrain test indicate that the battle for the 2026 season remains wide open, with Mercedes potentially harboring significant undisclosed speed and Ferrari showing encouraging reliability. As teams refine their cars ahead of the first race, understanding the true form of competitors will be crucial in predicting championship prospects.

Charles Leclerc’s comments suggest that observers and rival teams should expect more surprises as the season progresses, with the full capabilities of Mercedes’ car yet to be revealed.
