Lewis Hamilton has expressed optimism about Ferrari’s new car for the 2026 Formula 1 season after participating in testing at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona. With the season opener less than two months away at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, this initial test marked the first time the 2026 cars hit the track, signaling a crucial phase of preparation for all teams.
New Regulations Set the Stage for a Pivotal Year in F1
The 2026 season brings major regulatory changes that introduce significant unpredictability, making it a defining year for all competitors. For Hamilton, joining Ferrari after a difficult debut season with the Scuderia means this year could be pivotal. The seven-time world champion left Mercedes to partner with Charles Leclerc, replacing Carlos Sainz Jr, but struggled throughout 2025, failing to secure any podium finishes and ending the year sixth in the drivers’ standings with 156 points.
Encouraging Performance and Renewed Confidence in Barcelona
Despite the challenges of his first year with Ferrari, Hamilton set the fastest lap time during the Barcelona testing, completing a lap in 1:16.348 on the final day. He described the first few days of testing as “really solid” and praised the team’s renewed mindset.
Hamilton noted that the new cars have significantly less downforce than before, changing the driving dynamics. He said,

“
In terms of understanding the car and the balance, we have a lot less downforce than in previous years,
”
highlighting a more oversteering and snappy handling style. He added,
“The car generation is actually a little bit more fun to drive, it is oversteery, snappy and sliding, but it is easier to catch, and I would definitely say more enjoyable.”
The driver also emphasized continuous improvement, noting the strong teamwork and commitment within the squad, saying,
“
But we definitely have to improve, as everybody does, but we’ve had great debriefs, everyone is really on it, and I feel like there is a winning mentality in every single person in the team, more than ever.
”
Reflecting on the testing period, Hamilton shared,
“
It’s been a really enjoyable week, and a huge amount of work was done over the winter on my personal side, and then what the team have done to make changes going into the test.
”
Looking Ahead: Ferrari’s Title Aspirations and Upcoming Challenges
Ferrari last won the constructors’ championship in 2008, a year after Kimi Räikkönen narrowly secured the drivers’ title by a single point. With such a lengthy gap since their last major success, the team is keen to capitalize on the fresh regulations in 2026 to close the gap to their rivals.
Further testing is scheduled to take place in Bahrain next month, offering more opportunities to refine the car before the season begins in Melbourne on March 8. Lewis Hamilton’s encouraging start to testing signals potential growth for both the driver and Ferrari as they aim to contend strongly in the coming season.
