Liam Lawson is aiming to launch his second Formula 1 season with strong momentum, hoping to draw energy from the crowd in Melbourne. Although he races for New Zealand, Lawson regards the Australian Grand Prix as his closest experience to a home race.
Reflecting on a Challenging First Year in Formula 1
The 24-year-old driver experienced a mixed debut full season in F1 last year, facing challenges that included a mid-season move from Red Bull Racing to its sister team, Scuderia AlphaTauri. Lawson is determined to improve on last season’s performance as he begins the new campaign.
Renewed Energy After a Short Winter Break
Lawson emphasized the vital role that the brief winter break played in his preparation for the 2026 season.
“I’m super excited for Round 1 in Melbourne as we kick off the new season,”
he said. He added,
“While the winter break felt short, it was great to spend some time at home in New Zealand with friends and family to recharge and physically prepare for a demanding 2026.”
Adjusting to New Technical Regulations and Testing Insights
This year has brought fresh technical regulations that have introduced many unknowns for drivers and teams alike. Lawson expressed enthusiasm about adapting to these changes and highlighted the progress made during pre-season testing in Bahrain.
“There’s a lot of unknowns going into this year, with new regulations and new cars, meaning we’ll be continuously learning and adapting throughout the year which is exciting for the sport,”
he noted.
“The most recent testing in Bahrain was a reflection of this; understanding the reliability of the car and power unit, both of which run reliably throughout the week. Preparation is key as we enter this new era in F1, so that’s the continued focus.”
Looking Forward to Racing in a Familiar Environment
With the Melbourne event standing as the closest to a home race for Lawson, he is eager to connect with local fans and soak in the unique atmosphere. He stated,
“It’s as close as possible to a home race in Australia, so I’m looking forward to meeting the local fans and feeling the atmosphere which is always really special.”
Outlook for the Season Ahead
As Lawson embarks on his second year in Formula 1, the combination of renewed energy, technical challenges, and strong local support in Melbourne sets the stage for what could be a breakthrough campaign. His focus on learning and adapting to new cars, alongside staying physically and mentally prepared, will be key factors in determining how his 2026 F1 season unfolds.
