Luca Marini, riding for Honda, has completed a demanding three-day MotoGPtesting session at the Sepang International Circuit with a cautiously optimistic outlook as the 2026 season approaches. Despite the numerous challenges involved in testing, Marini believes his team is making meaningful strides toward closing the gap with their competitors.
Marini openly shared the difficulty of accurately assessing their position during tests, noting that varying factors such as fuel levels and tire choices make lap times an unreliable benchmark.
“It’s tough to gauge where we stand against the competition,”
he said, pointing to the upcoming Thailand GP as a critical moment for clearer assessment.
“To truly understand, we’ll have to wait for the first race.”
Key Personnel Boost Honda’s Development Efforts
Honda’s progress has been supported by the integration of important figures like Albesiano, along with test riders Takaaki Nakagami and Aleix Espargaro, whose involvement has enhanced bike development. Since joining Honda in 2024, Marini has noticed steady improvements driven by this collaborative effort.
“Progress has been made over time. Their involvement has come at a crucial moment, pushing everyone in the right direction,”
he explained, emphasizing how teamwork is vital to enhancing performance.
Marini remains realistic about the pace of development, stressing the need for continuous advancements amid rising competition.
“It’s very positive, but it’s never enough, especially as everyone else is improving too,”
he remarked. He also highlighted preparations for the next testing venue, Buriram, where adapting to the unique layout will be essential.
“We have to take it one step at a time, and we’ll have new elements to test in Buriram. That circuit is unique, and we need to find the right setup there.”
Assessment of Current Progress and Challenges Ahead
The critical question remains whether Honda and Marini’s team are improving fast enough to match their rivals. Marini urged caution when interpreting Sepang test results due to unknown tire and fuel conditions.

“At this point, it’s impossible to draw conclusions. Sepang tests should be taken with caution due to unknown tire choices and fuel quantities,”
he said.
“We’re not yet at the level we need to be to close the gap, but we’re positive because we know what we need to improve and where to focus our efforts. All we need is a little more time.”
Technical Setbacks and Marini’s Determined Approach
During the final day of testing, Marini experienced a technical issue that temporarily impeded his attempt to improve lap times.
“These things happen. Everything is under control,”
he reassured supporters. When questioned on missing a final time attack, he added,
“Things come up. I wanted to make it happen, but rain interrupted that plan. In the end, it doesn’t change much. The key was to test the many new features we had, and it was a demanding test in that regard.”
Despite the exhaustive day, Marini’s motivation stayed strong, though he admitted fatigue after continuous work in the paddock.
“It was a long day; I’m just a bit tired,”
he confessed, illustrating the stamina required of riders preparing for the season’s intensive schedule.
