Marc Marquez of the Ducati Lenovo Team dominated the opening day of the 2026 Sepang MotoGP test, reclaiming top position with a strong time of 1’57.018 on Tuesday. The session, however, was overshadowed by Fabio Quartararo’s crash at Turn 5, which forced the Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP rider to withdraw early due to persistent pain and a broken finger despite initial clearance from medical staff.
Strong Ducati Performances Mark Opening Day
Marquez’s return to the Sepang track after a year off was impressive, demonstrating significant pace and consistent improvement throughout the day. Close behind him was Fabio Di Giannantonio from the Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team, who narrowly missed leading with a late surge and finished second overall, only 0.256 seconds behind Marquez. Maverick Viñales, riding for Red Bull KTM Tech3, secured the third spot with a late effort that showcased confidence in his new machinery.
Francesco Bagnaia, also part of the Ducati Lenovo Team and described by team manager Davide Tardozzi as a “new Pecco,” completed the day in eighth place. Bagnaia appeared optimistic, planning a race simulation for day two after improving on his pace.
Further Ducati representation came from Alex Marquez with BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP, who topped the opening session but failed to improve in the afternoon, finishing among the top 13. His status as the most recent GP winner in Malaysia adds to the competitive narrative for Ducati on their home circuit.
Red Bull KTM’s Technical Advances Boost Competitive Edge
Maverick Viñales expressed enthusiasm for the upgrades brought by the Austrian factory, including a new chassis, swingarm, and aerodynamic improvements. He anticipated testing the revised chassis on Wednesday to better understand the impact. Teammates Enea Bastianini and Brad Binder contributed solid times but held back from pushing hard in the final laps. Pedro Acosta rounded out the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing lineup in 15th, focusing on gathering data rather than outright speed.
Honda Shows Marked Improvement With Promising Rider Results
The Honda HRC Castrol team posted encouraging results, with Luca Marini and teammate Joan Mir both placing within the top seven, building on prior test preparations. Marini just edged Mir by a small margin, showcasing Honda’s progress, highlighted by lap times more than half a second better than the previous year’s tests at Sepang.
Johann Zarco, representing Castrol Honda LCR, narrowly missed the top ten by 0.072 seconds, adding competitiveness to the Honda contingent. However, challenges arose for Diogo Moreira of the Pro Honda LCR team, who fell during the morning session at Turn 5 and spent considerable time in the garage repairing his bike, limiting his track time.
Aprilia and Trackhouse MotoGP Make Notable Progress
Aprilia’s Luca Bezzecchi was their leading rider in fifth place, trailing Marquez by just over half a second. The team introduced several new components, such as an updated tail unit, larger seat wings, and a fresh swingarm, to enhance bike performance. With Jorge Martin out, test rider Lorenzo Savadori actively contributed to development by working on ergonomics and electronics during the sessions.
Meanwhile, the Trackhouse MotoGP team received positive feedback from 2025 Australian GP winner Raul Fernandez, who completed the test day without incident, a welcome change after crashes in previous sessions at Sepang. Fernandez noted that testing the 2026 RS-GP model built on the previous year’s package reinforced positive expectations for the season ahead. His teammate Ai Ogura spent the day regaining comfort on the bike and preparing for more detailed testing on day two.
Challenges Mount for Yamaha Amid Early Season Testing
Fabio Quartararo’s crash and subsequent withdrawal cast a shadow over Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP’s efforts at Sepang. Despite returning briefly to set the ninth-fastest time, Quartararo decided to step back to recover from a broken finger and arm scrapes sustained in the accident. This development shifts the testing responsibility to his teammate Alex Rins, who finished 16th on day one, over a second behind Marquez’s pace.
Jack Miller, competing for Prima Pramac Yamaha MotoGP, was the second busiest Yamaha contender during the session, placing 14th. The Australian rider’s prior V4 experience, alongside Rins, will be crucial in driving Yamaha’s progress throughout the test series. Newcomer Toprak Razgatlioglu is making steady adaptations in his first MotoGP year, experimenting with different seats and aerodynamics, particularly noting improvement in late braking with rear aero components. Razgatlioglu also gained valuable insight by following Marquez on the track, an experience he aims to repeat in subsequent sessions.
Sepang Test Signals Intense Preparations Ahead of MotoGP Season
The opening day of the Sepang test has set an intense tone for the upcoming MotoGP season, blending promising performances with early challenges. Marc Marquez’s quick return to form underscores Ducati’s strength, while injuries and mechanical tests are affecting other teams’ preparations. Improvements from Honda and Aprilia point to a tightening field, with each manufacturer searching for vital advantages.
As the test continues, teams will refine setups and gather data that could influence race strategies and bike development throughout the year. With riders like Quartararo sidelined for now and newer talents adapting rapidly, the 2026 MotoGP season promises uncertainty, intense competition, and a reshuffling of expectations as technologies and rider dynamics evolve.
