Marco Bezzecchi Rejects Rivals, Extends Aprilia Deal to 2028

Italian rider Marco Bezzecchi has finalized a contract extension with Aprilia, securing his position with the team until at least the conclusion of the 2028 MotoGP season. This deal makes him the second confirmed competitor for the 2027 grid, following Johann Zarco’s recent two-year extension with LCR Honda.

Securing Bezzecchi Was a Priority Ahead of 2026 Season

Massimo Rivola prioritized locking in the 27-year-old ahead of the 2026 campaign, recognizing Bezzecchi’s growing value within Aprilia. After stepping up as the lead rider last year due to Jorge Martin’s injury setbacks, Bezzecchi’s contributions on the track and in development helped transform Aprilia into a formidable competitor, achieving three race victories and nine podium finishes.

Interest from Yamaha Before Aprilia Deal Renewal

As Aprilia prepares to make moves in the 2026 rider market—especially with Jorge Martin set to join Yamaha in 2027 as Fabio Quartararo’s replacement—retaining Bezzecchi became essential. Reports indicate Yamaha actively pursued Bezzecchi to form a team by acquiring both of Aprilia’s riders for their 2027 lineup. Despite this, Bezzecchi chose loyalty to Aprilia, leaving Yamaha to consider other riders like Alex Marquez and Francesco Bagnaia.

Honda Also Presented an Attractive Proposal

Honda was another contender in the hunt for Bezzecchi’s signature, particularly as Fabio Quartararo plans to join the Japanese manufacturer in 2027. Honda aimed to secure a strong teammate for Quartararo and reportedly offered Bezzecchi a tempting contract. Nevertheless, Aprilia’s commitment prevailed, and Bezzecchi declined the overture, choosing to remain with the Noale team.

Insights into Honda’s 2026 MotoGP Season Outlook

“The progress we showed in 2025 was incredibly rewarding” ?Luca Marini, MotoGP Rider

“Being part of Honda HRC Castrol is something very special” ?Joan Mir, MotoGP Rider

These statements reflect Honda’s clear objectives and motivation as they enter the 2026 season, reinforcing the competitive atmosphere in which Bezzecchi’s contract negotiations unfolded.

Aprilia’s Focus Shifts to Strengthening the Team

With their leading rider signed for the long term, Aprilia can now concentrate on filling the remaining seat. Enea Bastianini is the frontrunner to join Bezzecchi, though Francesco Bagnaia remains a potential candidate as well. The team’s advancements in rider stability and performance could influence their chances in upcoming seasons, especially as rival teams continue to adjust their lineups.
