Marco Bezzecchi has emerged as a standout performer in the 2025 MotoGP season, showcasing remarkable skill and resilience while riding for Aprilia. His achievements have been attributed not only to his individual talent but also to Aprilia’s strategic reinvention of the RS-GP motorcycle’s performance characteristics. This transformation has helped elevate Aprilia’s competitiveness in the championship.
Entering the 2025 season, Aprilia introduced a revamped team featuring Bezzecchi alongside reigning world champion Jorge Martin, under the guidance of new technical director Fabiano Sterlacchini. However, Martin’s injury during pre-season testing shifted the spotlight onto Bezzecchi, who took on the responsibility of leading the motorcycle’s development despite lacking prior experience on factory-spec bikes.
Evolution of the RS-GP’s Racing Capabilities
Early challenges did not deter the Aprilia team; steady progress during the initial races set the groundwork for a significant breakthrough following the post-race test at Jerez. Bezzecchi reflected on this pivotal moment:
“From the Jerez test, we understood two or three things that really helped us. When I went back home after the test, I said, ‘yeah, it’s possible’,”
he shared with Crash.net.
Former Grand Prix rider and World Superbike champion Sylvain Guintoli, who now serves as a MotoGP analyst for TNT Sports, highlighted a fundamental shift in the RS-GP’s performance profile this season. Historically, Aprilia excelled on high-speed flowing circuits like Silverstone, Assen, and Barcelona but struggled on tracks that demanded intense braking and stop-and-go handling, particularly when Michelin supplied harder tire carcasses.

Guintoli observed this transformation:
“Bez and the whole team have done a tremendous job,”
he commented to Crash.net.
“What was most impressive, I think, is that Aprilia had this tendency for many years to be a strong package at flowing tracks – like Silverstone, Assen, Barcelona.”
He added,
“But this year, they changed that. And together with Bez, they’ve really managed to shine. It’s been great to see – I always like that kind of story in racing.”
Season Highlights and Team Resilience
Bezzecchi’s efforts culminated in Aprilia’s most successful MotoGP campaign yet, with six victories across three Grand Prix events and three Sprint races, securing third place in the rider championship and propelling Aprilia to second in the constructors’ standings behind Ducati.
Guintoli, who clinched the 2014 World Superbike title with Aprilia, praised the long-standing team continuity:
“They’re great guys. Most of the team are still the same people I worked with ten years ago. It’s nice to see them doing well.”
Despite a nearly flawless season, Bezzecchi faced a setback at Mandalika when a collision with Marc Marquez caused shoulder injuries, ruling him out of the last rounds. Guintoli acknowledged the incident with understanding:
“The crash in Mandalika was unfortunate, but sometimes mistakes happen in close racing, and that’s all it was,”
he said.
“But it doesn’t take away the fact that Aprilia have done a great season and turned their package into a championship contender. So that must be really exciting for them.”
Recognizing Bezzecchi’s Impact and Future Prospects
On speculation about Marquez potentially securing titles with Aprilia, Guintoli emphasized the importance of acknowledging Bezzecchi’s own accomplishments:
“I think it’s important not to take away from the work done by Bezzecchi,”
Guintoli stated. He noted Bezzecchi’s steady development alongside an established world champion teammate, remarking:
“I think Bezzecchi has done tremendously in his first season as a factory rider and starting alongside the reigning world champion, Jorge Martin.”
He added,
“Aprilia has always said they treat both riders in the same way but still, in terms of status, if your team-mate is the world champion, you start as number two. And Bez took his time, he did all the groundwork and made that package work for him.”
Guintoli also outlined Bezzecchi’s journey leading up to his 2025 success:
“Bez did a brilliant 2023 season at VR46, then struggled with the front end of the GP23 Ducati, but now he’s helped create a package that clearly he’s at home on.”
Personal Commitment Beyond the Track
Beyond his racing insights, Sylvain Guintoli is personally engaged in a powerful cause. He plans to run the 2026 London Marathon in his racing leathers to honor the memory of his son Luca and raise funds for the children’s cancer charity PASIC.
