Martin Brundle recently shared his thoughts on Mercedes driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli as the young racer prepares to enter his second season in Formula 1. Antonelli’s first year was marked by early promise and mid-season challenges, leading to speculation about whether Mercedes would retain him or consider bringing in a star like Max Verstappen.
Despite some difficulties during his rookie year, Antonelli initially impressed in 2025. Questions arose around his future, especially as Mercedes showed interest in Verstappen, who ultimately committed to Red Bull. This paved the way for Antonelli and his teammate George Russell to receive contract extensions.
Brundle Sees Antonelli as Mercedes’ Clear Successor With Russell’s Strength Underlined
On The F1 Show, Brundle joined Ted Kravitz and Craig Slater to analyze Mercedes’ prospects. The team completed the most laps of any outfit during the Barcelona shakedown, with George Russell leading the count. Kravitz noted,
“George’s training camp has obviously worked out well!”
Slater added his own impressions, saying,
“I’ve just come back from Detroit. He looks like Tommy Hearns. I mean, he looks fantastic.”
Brundle agreed, highlighting Russell’s potential by saying,
“I think he must sense there’s a chance of a world championship here, George Russell.”
Brundle also emphasized Antonelli’s growth, explaining that despite missing nine races last season, Antonelli maintained composure and closed the gap to Russell by the campaign’s end. He commented,
“Kimi Antonelli will be even closer to him this year. He’s got that experience under his belt.”
Brundle sees the pair as very evenly matched drivers and believes that the Mercedes cars will present fluctuating conditions that will test their skills throughout the season. He suggested that while he favors Russell to challenge for the title over the full season, both drivers will be formidable competitors. Regarding Antonelli’s position in the team, Brundle stated,
“And so he doesn’t have to keep looking over his shoulder all the time.”
Potential Concerns for Mercedes Despite Strong Barcelona Shakedown Showing
Mercedes appeared dominant at the Circuit de Catalunya with Antonelli and Russell participating in qualifying and race simulations, completing over 500 laps—more than any other team. This led many to view them as prime title contenders this year.
Nevertheless, Brundle expressed some reservations about Mercedes’ possible competitiveness moving forward. While he favored Russell as a favorite for the drivers’ championship early in the season, some uncertainties remain about how the team will perform under pressure and variable race conditions.
For Antonelli, solidifying his place and closing the performance gap with his experienced teammate remains paramount. With widely held assumptions that his Mercedes seat is secure, Antonelli enters 2026 with substantial backing from team principal Toto Wolff and the entire Mercedes organization—even as driver market rumors swirl amid a potentially active transfer window fueled by Verstappen’s situation at Red Bull.
