Max Verstappen Joins Iconic Nürburgring 24-Hour Race in May

Four-time Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen is set to compete in his first 24-hour sports car race at the Nürburgring Nordschleife this May, fulfilling a long-held personal ambition. The Red Bull driver will join his sportscar racing team to contest the challenging endurance event in Germany, driving a Red Bull-themed Mercedes-AMG GT3 alongside teammates Daniel Juncadella, Jules Gounon, and Lucas Auer.

Unique Challenge of the Nürburgring Nordschleife Circuit

The Nürburgring Nordschleife, a nearly 13-mile track winding through the German hills, is famous for its demanding layout that includes over 150 corners and close barriers, making it one of the most formidable circuits in motorsport. Although Formula 1 last raced there in 1976, when champion Niki Lauda suffered severe injuries, endurance racing continues to thrive at the venue.

Verstappen’s Recent Experience and Upcoming Preparations

Verstappen made his initial appearance at the circuit last September, competing in a GT4-spec car for a four-hour race designed to earn him a license to race faster vehicles on the Nordschleife. Later that month, he returned to claim victory in a GT3 Ferrari race. To prepare for the demanding 24-hour event, his team plans for him to race again at Nürburgring on March 21, scheduled between the Chinese Grand Prix and the Japanese Grand Prix.

Event Details and Broader Racing Calendar

The 24-hour race is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. local time on May 16 and conclude the next day, just one week before the Canadian Grand Prix. This timing integrates the endurance challenge into Verstappen’s busy Formula 1 calendar while allowing him to take on a significant new motorsport test.

Verstappen Reflects on the Nürburgring Experience

The Nürburgring Nordschleife is a special place. There’s no other track like it,

Verstappen said.

The 24h Nürburgring is a race that’s been on my bucket list for a long time, so I’m really thrilled we can make it happen now.

Significance of Verstappen’s Participation

Max Verstappen’s entry into the Nürburgring 24-hour race highlights his desire to expand beyond Formula 1 and embrace one of motorsport’s toughest endurance challenges. His participation brings increased attention to the event and offers fans a unique opportunity to see a current F1 champion tackle this legendary circuit in a new racing discipline.
