Max Verstappen’s Dominant Monza Win Exposes McLaren’s Weakness

Max Verstappen’s dominant win at Monza during the Italian Grand Prix highlighted a clear gap between Red Bull Racing and McLaren, as the Dutch driver effortlessly distanced himself from Lando Norris. Red Bull’s special Monza rear wing and strategic adjustments played a crucial role in securing this commanding victory.

Technical Upgrades Behind Red Bull’s Success

Red Bull Racing introduced several technical updates over the Monza weekend, with team advisor Helmut Marko explaining that the car setup differed significantly from previous races. On Friday, the team intentionally lowered engine power to protect the power units, a tactic they have since dropped. They also shifted reliance from simulators to driver feedback, complemented by a slightly modified floor, which contributed to their advantage on the high-speed Italian circuit.

Innovations in Brake Cooling Inspired by McLaren

While Red Bull showcased clear improvements, some experts remain skeptical about the full extent of the upgrades. The RB21’s braking cooling system appears to have undergone changes that closely mirror McLaren’s design, aimed at managing tire wear more effectively. It seems Red Bull has adapted a solution inspired by McLaren’s brakes, giving them better thermal control during intense braking phases.

How Red Bull Adapted McLaren’s Brake System Features

Photographic evidence reveals that Red Bull’s updated brake component resembles the one used on McLaren’s MCL39, especially regarding the redesigned cooling channels beneath what is known as the cake tin. These channels target airflow in critical hot zones created during braking, suggesting a direct adoption or adaptation of McLaren’s innovation to enhance brake performance.

Challenges of Monza for McLaren’s Car Design

Despite the apparent inspiration drawn from McLaren’s braking technology, Monza’s layout is not ideal for the MCL39. The circuit favors high-speed straights over medium-speed corners, where McLaren’s car typically excels. Meanwhile, Red Bull continues to operate one of the most efficient cars on the grid, which remains a key factor on the fast Temple of Speed. The forthcoming races will reveal whether Red Bull’s progress at Monza is sustainable or a peak performance for the weekend.
