Former Formula 1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya emphasized the importance of Lewis Hamilton outperforming his Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc as the 2025 season progresses. Following a challenging debut year at Maranello, Hamilton is determined to regain his championship-winning momentum after a focused offseason reset.
Significance of Beating the Teammate Within Ferrari
Montoya explained that beyond the usual desire to best a teammate, Hamilton’s ability to surpass Leclerc is crucial for securing development upgrades and gaining influence in his side of the Ferrari garage. In an interview ahead of the Australian Grand Prix, Montoya said,
“I think the big thing for Lewis, I’m not sure where Ferrari stands on the pecking order, but the big thing for Lewis is he needs to find a way to beat Charles.”
He expanded on how intra-team performance affects car development, stating,
“He needs to move Ferrari along and focus. It gets to a point when you’re in a team, and your teammate keeps beating you, all the development and everything is going to go to your teammate and it’s going to be focused on whoever is fastest.”
Montoya added,
“So, you need to be able to lead that. You need to be the man that leads that.”
Hamilton’s Chances and Internal Team Dynamics
When asked if Hamilton could take on this leadership role, Montoya expressed confidence in his capabilities but highlighted the importance of teamwork.
“Absolutely, he can,”
Montoya remarked, adding that Hamilton must ensure his support group within the garage matches his commitment.
“But I think he needs to make sure his inner group, like the group on his side of the garage, work extra hard and they’re as committed as he is. I think that’s the biggest thing as a driver that people underestimate is how good a job you do with the people in your garage and how hungry are they for winning with you.”
Current Season Standings and Upcoming Challenges
At the season-opening Australian Grand Prix, Hamilton qualified seventh, behind Leclerc who secured fourth. Meanwhile, Mercedes drivers George Russell and Kimi Antonelli claimed the front row, with Russell on pole position. This reflects the competitive scenario Hamilton faces, both against his teammate and rival teams, as the season unfolds.
Hamilton’s performance relative to Leclerc will be a decisive factor in shaping the development priorities at Ferrari and potentially determine the team’s trajectory in the 2025 championship fight.
