With just a year left on the current contract, speculation about the MotoGP future at Phillip Island has unsettled the local community, raising concerns that the event may not return after 2026. The uncertainty has prompted local officials and stakeholders to push for clear guidance about the race’s long-term prospects at the iconic Australian circuit.
Local Fears Spur Calls for Government Action
The Bass Coast Shire Council initiated a petition late last year, urgently requesting clarity from the Victorian Government and Premier Jacinta Allen about whether Australia’s most famous motorcycle race will stay beyond its current agreement. Community sentiment has been marked by worry as MotoGP remains a major economic and cultural draw for Phillip Island, and any potential departure would have ripple effects across the region.
Ongoing Negotiations Over Contract Extension
Speaking recently on the KTM Summer Grill, event boss Auld addressed the speculation and confirmed consistent efforts to safeguard the event’s future. He told Speedcafe,
We’ve got a contract through to the end of [2026],
Auld told Speedcafe. Highlighting the enduring focus on extending the partnership, Auld described ongoing discussions with Dorna, the series rights-holder, and explained that it is common for questions to arise regarding contract status as the final year approaches.
Auld stressed that Phillip Island holds a unique place in the MotoGP calendar due to its reputation among riders and fans. He noted,
You listen to any of the riders when they rank their top circuits – Phillip Island ends up being there in the top couple, and so we think it’s an incredible asset.

Upgrades, Challenges, and the Need for Investment
Addressing the need for improvements at the venue, Auld was candid about required upgrades, citing recent enhancements such as new walls, catchfences, and a full track resurfacing. He remarked,
It does need some investment though. We need to invest in infrastructure. All parties are keen to do that,
said Auld. These infrastructure improvements are viewed as vital for ensuring that the circuit can continue to attract MotoGP in the long term.
One of the challenges faced by the circuit has been recent spells of severe weather during race weekends, which has sparked discussion about potentially altering the timing of the race. Auld commented on this matter, stating,
Potentially, you could tweak the timing of the race. There are some things we could do to improve the event, but the base of it is really, really healthy and we’re keen for that to continue, so we’ll work pretty hard to make sure that we extend it.
Looking Ahead to 2026 and Beyond
The Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix is confirmed to return to Phillip Island on October 23-25, 2026, under the existing contract. Stakeholders remain committed to the MotoGP future at Phillip Island, with active negotiations underway and a broad consensus on the need for further investment. While uncertainty persists, both the local and racing communities await official updates, hoping to secure the event’s place well beyond its current agreement.
