MotoGP Sepang Test Highlights: Márquez Leads Despite Crashes

The 2026 MotoGP season looms closer as riders concluded the three-day pre-season test at Sepang, Malaysia. The sessions revealed key performances and challenges, with reigning champion Marc Márquez leading the timing charts despite enduring crashes, while teams prepared intensively for the upcoming contests.

Marc Márquez’s Strong Start and Early Incidents

On the opening day, Marc Márquez demonstrated his championship form by setting the fastest lap time of 1:57.018, indicating readiness for the season ahead. Close on his heels was Fabio Di Giannantonio, who finished just over a quarter of a second behind, showing continuation from his recent podium finish in Valencia. However, not all riders enjoyed smooth outings; Fabio Quartararo experienced a crash but avoided serious injury, though his team later confirmed he would miss the remaining test days due to a minor finger injury.

Quartararo explained,

“We already tested what we needed to during last week’s Shakedown Test. Of course, having two more days would have been helpful for electronics and mapping, but I think we’ve done enough, so I prefer to sit out the remainder of the test.”

Quartararo’s withdrawal also meant he would be absent from the season launch event in Kuala Lumpur following the tests.

Maverick Viñales ended day one in third place, trailing Márquez by only two-tenths of a second. Viñales had the notable support of his new performance coach, racing legend Jorge Lorenzo. Other riders included Marco Bezzecchi, who, after recently renewing his contract, tested several bike upgrades such as larger seat wings and a modified tail unit. Lorenzo Savadori substituted for Jorge Martín, who remained sidelined. Rookies Diogo Moreira and Toprak Razgatlioglu struggled to adapt fully, with Moreira falling but fortunately avoiding injury, though he did not return later that day. Johann Zarco narrowly missed reaching the top ten, finishing 11th.

Day Two Brings Challenges and Rising Performances

The second day began with concerns over Yamaha’s new V4 engines following Quartararo’s initial crash, leading to uncertainty about their continued participation. However, the testing went ahead, and Joan Mir seized the moment by recording a 1:56 lap, the quickest so far, closely pursued by Di Giannantonio and Franco Morbidelli during the morning session. The track also saw another accident as Álex Márquez crashed at Turn 5, yet the session continued into the afternoon.

After lunch, Francesco Bagnaia led the riders back to the asphalt, but rain curtailed the session less than an hour later. Once the wet track dried, only a few competitors, including Moreira, Morbidelli, and Viñales, ventured out for final laps. Joan Mir maintained his strong performance by ending the day atop the timing sheets.

Final Day Sees Yamaha Return and Álex Márquez Leading

With resolved technical issues, Yamaha’s riders returned on the third day, welcomed by clear skies. Massimo Merrgalli, Yamaha’s team director, remarked on the team’s recovery from the earlier setback:

“Even though we were forced to temporarily halt the test due to a technical issue that occurred on Day 1, we were able to understand the cause and could finish today‘s test thanks to the big effort of the engineers here in Malaysia as well as in Japan and Italy. What we didn‘t have time for was fine-tuning the set-ups, which we will, of course, move to the Buriram Test.”

It was Álex Márquez, the championship runner-up and brother to Marc, who seized the fastest lap on day three, completing the test with the best overall time. Reports also noted Álex plans to announce his plans for 2027 ahead of the season opener in Thailand. Meanwhile, Marc Márquez experienced a minor crash at Turn 1 but showed resilience by quickly recovering and returning his bike to the pits, demonstrating his continued competitiveness after over four months away from racing.

The final morning session featured intense competition, with Bagnaia, Di Giannantonio, and the Márquez brothers all posting lap times in the 1:56 range. The latter half of the testing day focused on Sprint race simulations, where Álex once again set the pace, closely matched by Bagnaia and Marc Márquez. A light rain shower appeared toward the day’s end but did not affect the session’s completion.

Looking Ahead to Buriram and the 2026 Season Start

Following the intense and unpredictable action at Sepang, teams and riders now turn their attention to the final pre-season test in Buriram, Thailand. The performance trends, engine developments, and rider fitness displayed in Malaysia set the stage for the season opener at the same venue. Fans and participants alike anticipate how these pre-season form lines will translate into race-day results amid a highly competitive MotoGP landscape.
