MotoGP fans in India are hopeful again as the Uttar Pradesh government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with AVW Global to bring international motorcycle racing back to the Buddh International Circuit (BIC) in Greater Noida. This agreement, facilitated by the State Transformation Commission, intends to restore MotoGP events and also host the Asia Road Racing Championship at the renowned venue.
Experienced Management to Oversee Technical and Operational Tasks
AVW Global, led by former MotoGP rider Karel Abraham and CEO Amit Sandill, will be responsible for managing technical and operational details linked to the races. Leveraging their expertise from overseeing the Brno Circuit in Czechia, the company aims to handle logistics, secure necessary approvals, and prepare the BIC for international competition. Abraham highlighted India’s immense motorcycle market, emphasizing that world-class racing belongs there and that fans will be central to their vision.
Long-term Vision for Motorsport Growth and Youth Engagement in UP
The Uttar Pradesh government views the revival as an opportunity to establish a sustainable motorsport ecosystem, promote youth development, and stimulate a thriving sporting economy around BIC. Though the circuit impressed audiences during the 2023 Indian GP, the focus now is on maintaining those high standards to ensure long-lasting success and benefits for the region.
Challenges Overcome and New Partnerships Established
The path to revival faced obstacles after the 2023 race organized by Fairstreet Sports, with the 2024 event initially cancelled. Subsequently, Dorna Sports, the rights holder for MotoGP, signed a fresh three-year agreement directly with the UP government, initiating a search for new promoters. Liberty Media, the current owners driving MotoGP’s global expansion, recognize India’s huge two-wheeler market and see it as a strategic territory for growth.
Next Steps Point Toward Greater Noida’s Rising Role in Motorsport
The upcoming tasks include securing slots on the MotoGP calendar and aligning with championship requirements, which if successful, could soon make Greater Noida a key northern hub for motorcycle racing, tourism, and investment. This development energizes racing enthusiasts eager to see top-level motorcycle competition return to India’s tracks.
“India is one of the world’s largest motorcycle markets, so it deserves world-class racing. The fans will be the focus of our efforts.” – Karel Abraham, Former MotoGP Rider
