MotoGP Star Aleix Espargaro Quits Pro Cycling After Brutal Year

Aleix Espargaro, known for his daring spirit and three MotoGP victories, has decided to withdraw from professional cycling following an unexpectedly difficult year. The MotoGP and Aleix Espargaro made this announcement after facing relentless challenges that prompted him to dedicate his energy toward his evolving responsibilities as a Honda test rider.

From MotoGP Success to a Daunting New Challenge

Espargaro concluded his MotoGP racing career in 2024, having shaped an impressive legacy that included three premier class wins and playing a crucial role in transforming the Aprilia motorcycle into a leading competitor. Energized by new ambitions, he joined Lidl Trek in hopes of starting a second career in professional cycling in 2025. However, he quickly learned that the leap into a new discipline brought unexpected trials.

Facing Unexpected Hardships in Professional Cycling

In an open message on his Instagram, Espargaro shared how the leap into cycling was far more challenging than imagined.

“This year I fulfilled one of the biggest dreams of my life: Debut as a professional cyclist,”

Espargaro revealed, pointing to an experience defined by physical exhaustion and mental hurdles. His admission highlighted the enduring fatigue he battled and the difficulties of managing dual sporting careers.

The year was filled with demanding workouts, persistent injuries, and the ongoing difficulty of splitting his focus between the world of cycling and his duties as a Honda test rider.

“Many hours of training, almost permanent fatigue… at 35 years old, there was a lot to learn from a new world,”

he reflected. Balancing these obligations became a daunting effort.

Support and Lessons Learned Along the Way

Despite the turbulent year, Espargaro found reasons to be thankful and proud.

“I have challenged myself every day to be up to it, and one thing I can assure you: I am very proud of myself,”

he stated. He extended heartfelt gratitude to those who stood by him, especially Carlos Verona, the Lidl Trek cycling team, and his brother, Aritz Arberas, appreciating their constant support and guidance throughout his journey.

Transitioning to a Focused Role with Honda

Looking ahead to 2026, Espargaro explained his change in plans, clarifying his intentions regarding professional cycling.

“Next year, I’ll stay with the team, but I won’t be racing professionally. I’ll just be training with them and will remain more focused on Honda,”

he confirmed. The decision was influenced by a pivotal moment during the Valencia Grand Prix, where he realized the immense strain he was under.

“I arrived completely exhausted with three broken vertebrae from the bike,”

Espargaro remembered, mentioning the wisdom shared by Honda’s team boss Alberto Puig, who encouraged him to concentrate on his duties as a test rider.

A New Chapter and Enduring Determination

With this heartfelt decision, Espargaro is closing an ambitious chapter and setting his sights on new achievements in MotoGP as a test rider. Showing no signs of slowing down, he reaffirmed his determination:

“2026 I want more! Let’s go for it, friends!”

By channeling his energy into helping Honda and continuing his training with Lidl Trek—minus the pressures of racing—Espargaro embraces both the lessons and pride brought by his foray into professional cycling. His journey demonstrates that, in the world of elite sports, dreams are often coupled with unforeseen challenges that demand unwavering drive and passion.
