MotoGP to Race on Adelaide Street Circuit in 2027

The premier MotoGP motorcycle racing event will move to a newly designed street circuit in Adelaide starting in 2027, following a six-year agreement announced by MotoGP, the South Australian Government, and Sports Entertainment Group. This deal guarantees that the championship’s top tier will remain in South Australia until at least 2032, elevating the event’s status on the global racing calendar.

The announcement was made on Thursday, 19 February, at a packed press conference, unveiling plans for the first-ever MotoGP race on an urban street circuit purpose-built for the championship. This transition aims to replicate the vibrant atmosphere and commercial success seen in city-based motorsport events like the Las Vegas and Singapore Grands Prix in Formula 1.

Design and Safety Features of the New Adelaide Circuit

The new circuit will span approximately 4.195 kilometers, featuring 18 challenging corners and largely following the layout of the iconic Adelaide Street Circuit that hosted Formula 1 races from 1985 to 1995. However, modifications have been incorporated to satisfy the strict safety regulations mandated by the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM), considering the high speeds—reaching over 340 km/h—that MotoGP riders will achieve on the straight sections.

The opportunity to design a purpose-built circuit in the city streets is something truly unique. Every element has been engineered to meet the highest standards of modern MotoGP, ensuring riders can race at full intensity with complete confidence,

Expected Economic Benefits and Community Impact

South Australia’s Premier, Peter Malinauskas, praised the agreement as a significant achievement, aimed at solidifying the state’s reputation as Australia’s leading destination for major events. He highlighted the potential for the race to generate substantial economic activity, comparable to the impacts seen with the LIV Golf tournament and the AFL Gather Round.

We are now competing with the rest of the nation for the world’s best events — and winning.

This is about generating economic activity, supporting jobs, and putting South Australia on the global stage,

Premier Malinauskas said.

The inaugural MotoGP Adelaide Street Circuit race is scheduled for November 2027, and it will become a critical part of the championship’s flyaway season, attracting fans and competitors from across Australia and abroad.

Strategic Importance for MotoGP and Adelaide

The move to a city-based circuit represents a strategic shift for MotoGP as it capitalizes on urban race formats that enhance fan experience and commercial opportunities. By hosting the event within Adelaide’s central streets, the championship can offer a dynamic and immersive atmosphere, similar to successful events in other global cities.

For Adelaide and South Australia, the race promises to boost tourism, create jobs, and affirm the region’s role on the international sports stage, reinforcing its image as a vibrant, modern city capable of hosting world-class sporting events. The partnership with Sports Entertainment Group and local government illustrates a shared commitment to long-term growth and innovation in sports entertainment.

With the agreement securing the event through 2032, the MotoGP Adelaide Street Circuit is poised to become a landmark fixture in both the sport and the region’s calendar, generating sustained interest and economic benefits for years to come.
