The 2026 NASCAR Cup Series will launch its season with the Cook Out Clash at Bowman Gray Stadium on Sunday evening, marking the opening exhibition race. This event will showcase top drivers competing on the historic quarter-mile track, utilizing a unique format to determine the final starting lineup.
Details of the Cook Out Clash Competition Format
For this year’s event, 38 cars are registered, but only 23 will race at Bowman Gray Stadium. Competitors will be divided into practice groups, followed by a final qualifying session that decides which drivers secure spots in the main 200-lap feature. The 20 fastest qualifiers guarantee their starting positions, while those outside the top 20 face the 75-lap Last Chance Qualifier, where only the two top finishers move on.
The last spot on the grid will be filled by the highest-ranked driver in the 2025 season points who has not already qualified. Notably, there will be no heat races this year, differing from the previous season’s format, as Saturday’s on-track activities were cancelled.
Noteworthy Drivers and Team Changes This Year
Among the entrants, Corey LaJoie will drive the No. 6 RFK Racing Ford in place of Brad Keselowski, who remains sidelined due to a broken right femur. Bowman Gray Stadium veteran Burt Myers returns in the No. 50 Team AmeriVet Chevrolet for his second consecutive Cook Out Clash appearance. Chad Finchum is also set to participate behind the wheel of the No. 66 Garage 66 Ford, adding to the competitive field assembled for the weekend.
Broadcast Information and Event Coverage
The Cook Out Clash will be broadcast live on FOX beginning at 8 p.m. ET, with radio coverage available through MRN Radio and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. Fans can expect comprehensive coverage and updates throughout the event, including qualifying sessions and the Last Chance Qualifier.
