Natalie Decker, known for her career in NASCAR, opened up about how she met her husband, Derek Lemke, sharing a surprising and amusing story involving a direct message when she was just 14. The couple’s connection began years ago at a racing event, illustrating how fate and patience played a role in their relationship. Decker’s reflections also include her support for her son Levi’s future aspirations, whether they lie in motorsports or other sports.
The Beginning of Natalie Decker and Derek Lemke’s Relationship
Natalie Decker and Derek Lemke’s paths first crossed at a racing event when Decker was 14 and Lemke was 18. Lemke, who also competed part-time in the NASCAR Truck Series, caught Decker’s eye immediately. She recalls attending Lemke’s home track in Elko, Wisconsin, where she saw him waiting in line to get a pit pass, marked by his baby blue Bauer hat worn backward. Despite a strong attraction, Decker was aware of the age difference and thought their connection was unlikely to develop at that time.
I was 14 years old, and I went to his home track at Elko [Wisc.]. And he was a few people in front of me in line checking in to get your pit pass, And he was wearing a baby blue Bauer hat, a hockey brand, backwards. This isn’t gonna work. He’s 18, I’m 14.
Natalie Decker said on the Speedway Sessions podcast.
Though their initial encounter didn’t turn into anything immediately, fate brought them together again a year later during Oktoberfest, a racing season event. By this time, Decker was smitten and Lemke reached out to her with an unexpected message. He sent a direct message asking her to contact him when she was legally an adult at 18, ensuring they would avoid any concerns regarding their age gap.

The whole year goes by, and now we’re at Oktoberfest at the end of the season. I think he’s the coolest guy. I think he’s so cute. I’m crushing on him hard, and I’m just like this little girl to him at this point, (Lemke texts) Call me when you’re 18. And I said, ‘Bet. I will.’
Natalie Decker added.
Life Together and Supporting Their Son Levi’s Dreams
Years have passed since those early moments, and now Natalie Decker and Derek Lemke are married and proud parents to their son, Levi. While Decker is intensely focused on her ambitions as a driver, she expresses a nurturing and open attitude towards her son’s future. Levi’s career path is not dictated by his parents, as Decker stated she would be happy if he pursued motorsports, but also fully supports other interests such as golf or hockey.
If he wants to, I would love it, He can play golf; he can play hockey. I don’t care. I just want him to love something, but racing would be really cool. I always just want to be involved with my family more than anything. And I feel like we keep our circle really, really small.
Natalie Decker noted.
Decker emphasizes the importance of family and quality time over any specific professional pursuit. This perspective highlights her deep commitment to maintaining a close-knit family environment above all else. Her openness about Levi’s potential passion for various sports demonstrates her supportive nature as a mother.
