No Excuses: Kimi Antonelli Faces Make-or-Break F1 Season

Kimi Antonelli approaches his sophomore Formula 1 season under intense scrutiny following a promising rookie year with Mercedes. As anticipation grows for his performance in 2026, former Ferrari driver Riccardo Patrese emphasizes that Antonelli must demonstrate he can contend for the championship if Mercedes provides a competitive car. The young Italian’s journey so far reveals both potential and pressures aligned with a high-stakes campaign ahead.

Review of Antonelli’s 2025 Season: Early Successes and Mid-Season Challenges

The 2025 season saw Antonelli start impressively, particularly during the initial races from Melbourne through Canada. Highlights included securing pole position in the Miami Sprint and achieving his first podium finish in Canada. Despite encountering difficulties mid-season, Antonelli rebounded with strong points and podium placements in Brazil and Las Vegas. He ultimately concluded the year as the highest-ranking rookie, trailing Lewis Hamilton by a mere six points—the teammate he replaced at Mercedes.

Riccardo Patrese’s Perspective: The Learning Curve Is Over

Patrese believes Antonelli has completed his adjustment phase and must elevate his performance in 2026. In a detailed statement, he noted:

“Antonelli proved his worth towards the end of the season. He started to behave as expected, and sometimes he makes things difficult for Russell. He has to learn and focus on everything. In his first season in F1, he had to learn a lot by adapting to many situations, and now he should know everything. Last year, I said we had to leave him alone and not criticize him. This year, if he has the car to win the championship, which could happen, and he has a very good teammate like Russell, he can’t have any excuses,” he told F1 Passion.

The veteran also highlighted the importance of consistency and readiness to compete directly with teammate George Russell. He added:

“He has to get on this train and try to fight for the championship, be competitive to fight for the championship. He can beat Russell, or there could be a close fight between them. Now he has to be on the same level as Russell… this season, there’s a greater chance that the cars will break down with these new engines. So for Antonelli, this is an important season because he really needs to be ready to provide consistency,” he added.

Mercedes W17’s Promising Test Performance Sets a Strong Foundation

Mercedes enters the 2026 season buoyed by encouraging early testing results with the new W17 car. During the Barcelona shakedown, the team logged the highest mileage among all competitors—completing 500 laps and over 2,300 kilometers—outpacing rival Ferrari’s 442 laps. Including customer teams Alpine, McLaren, and Williams, Mercedes-powered cars accumulated more than 1,100 laps and 5,290 kilometers in total, illustrating exceptional reliability and development progress under the new regulations.

Kimi Antonelli qualified fifth in testing, recording a lap time of 1:17.081, trailing teammate George Russell who posted 1:16.445—just fractions of a second shy of Lewis Hamilton’s fastest time. This performance hints at a competitive starting point for Mercedes in a season where minimizing mechanical failures will be critical.

Drivers’ Perspectives on the New Car’s Handling and Setup Potential

George Russell praised the Mercedes W17’s reliability and driving experience during initial outings. He remarked:

“I think it was a very positive test, to be honest, and we had lots of mileage on the car, which was the main focus of the test. The car’s feeling nice to drive, no major issues, no porpoising… so all in all a decent few days,” he said via F1.com.

Kimi Antonelli echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing increased agility and setup flexibility provided by the new car’s design. He explained:

“It’s fun to drive. You have a bit more room to play with the set-up, to play with the car, which is super nice and super interesting as well as a driver, to also understand what compromises you can find set-up-wise.”

With Bahrain testing imminent, Antonelli approaches the season opener with heightened optimism and determination to meet rising expectations as he aims to become a genuine contender in the Formula 1 championship battle.
