The fire occurred in late December 2025 at the family home in Gaston County, North Carolina, resulting in Dennis Hamlin’s fatal injuries and severe harm to his wife, Mary Lou Hamlin. The report identifies the origin of the fire as a bedroom but has not yet established the exact cause of the blaze.

The fire broke out on December 28, 2025, engulfing nearly half of the residence by the time first responders arrived eight minutes after being dispatched. Firefighters faced challenges due to limited water access, requiring tanker trucks to shuttle water to the scene, which prolonged containment efforts to about two hours. Ultimately, the fire caused approximately $776,000 in property damage.
Dennis and Mary Lou Hamlin were found in the front yard after being helped out of the house before emergency personnel arrived. Both were immediately taken to CaroMont Regional Medical Center; Dennis later died from his injuries, while Mary Lou was transferred to the Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Burn Center in Winston-Salem for specialized treatment. She remains in recovery and was able to attend the Daytona 500 in person despite her injuries.

Prior to the Daytona 500, Denny Hamlin spoke about the devastating moment he learned of the fire and his father’s passing. He recalled receiving an urgent call from his sister informing him about the blaze.
“I got a call from my sister that said the parents’ house is on fire, the whole house is gone,”
Hamlin explained.
“My mom took him from the bedroom to outside in the front yard. I was just driving so fast to try to get there and they said they had already been taken to the hospital.”
His grief deepened upon seeing his father’s condition firsthand.
“What made it real was seeing my dad. I saw him laying there after he had passed, I just knew that it was real in that moment. Obviously I saw how burned he was and, you know, at that time I felt for my mom. She saw it all first-hand,”
Hamlin expressed.

As the family copes with this loss, Denny Hamlin expressed gratitude for the condolences and support received.
“Thank you to everyone who has reached out with condolences on my father’s passing,”
he wrote on social media.
“My mother continues to improve, and our family truly appreciates the outpouring of support and the respect for our privacy during this time.”
While sorting through the remains of his parents’ home, Hamlin also suffered a setback, re-injuring his surgically repaired right shoulder. He acknowledged ongoing difficulties with his recovery:
“I don’t think that it ever healed properly. Just noticed some issues, really kind of right after the season. It just was nagging me a little bit. Took a little fall at my mom’s house, going through all the rubble and stuff and just didn’t feel right. Got it re-scanned and re-tore it again.”
