Pedro Acosta Declared Fit for French MotoGP Grand Prix After Key Arm Surgery

Pedro Acosta has been declared fit to compete in this weekend’s French MotoGP Grand Prix after undergoing crucial arm-pump surgery. The KTM rider had the surgery on the Tuesday following last month’s Jerez race and test, finally addressing a condition that had plagued him since the start of his 2024 MotoGP season. Medical clearance was granted at Le Mans on Thursday, allowing Acosta to return to the grid amid mounting pressure to perform.

Acosta admitted that his arm discomfort had worsened significantly in recent events.

“The [previous] times I had problems, it was very minor,”

he explained.

“My arm hurt a bit, and that was it. But in the last two races, it felt like my arm was going to explode. Even during the Jerez test, I had to look at my hand because it felt like it was about to split open.”

The Spaniard’s struggles coincide with KTM’s ongoing performance challenges, which have forced him to revert to his 2024 bike and fueled speculation about his future within the team. In reflecting on his recent dip in form, Acosta commented,

“I shouldn’t use the arm as an excuse, although it has surely cost me some positions. It was the right time to get it taken care of.”

Arm-pump most often becomes problematic during full race distances, yet Acosta’s pain had begun affecting him even during qualifying sessions, where only a handful of fast laps are crucial.

“The fact that it happened during four-lap stints at Jerez was worrying,”

he noted, underscoring how the condition was impacting his ability to push hard at critical moments.

The 20-year-old’s recent grid positions, unusually low at 12th for both Qatar and Spain, reflect his ongoing struggles. While he managed to finish eighth and seventh in those races, respectively, those results were influenced partially by attrition and penalties among other riders. Still, the lower qualifying spots highlight the extent to which both arm-pump and KTM’s difficulties have affected his competitiveness during qualifying.

Looking ahead, a fully fit Pedro Acosta faces a crucial weekend at Le Mans, as reclaiming the unofficial title of KTM team leader becomes increasingly urgent. Maverick Vinales of Tech3 has recently emerged as a strong challenger for that role, intensifying the rivalry within the team. Acosta’s performance at the French Grand Prix will likely be seen as a critical turning point in his 2024 campaign.

Meanwhile, Somkiat Chantra, who also underwent arm-pump surgery after the Spanish GP, will not be racing this weekend. The LCR Honda rider’s rookie struggles continue as he remains sidelined, underscoring how this condition can severely impact a rider’s season and momentum.
