Pedro Acosta is determined to compete alongside Marc Marquez at the highest level of MotoGP, and he appears willing to make significant choices to accomplish this goal. After debuting in MotoGP with KTM, Acosta has earned widespread attention as a promising young talent, carefully positioning himself to challenge established riders like Marquez by 2027.
Despite finishing sixth in his 2024 season and fourth the year before, with 12 podium finishes including sprint races, Acosta has yet to secure his first MotoGP race victory. This ongoing pursuit of a breakthrough win has motivated his strategic decision to join Ducati next season, aiming to elevate his standing by sharing a team with Marquez.
Acosta Ready to Join Ducati and Replace Francesco Bagnaia
The 21-year-old Spanish rider is set to become part of Ducati’s factory squad for the 2027 season, stepping into the spot once held by Francesco Bagnaia. Sources reveal that VR46 showed interest in Acosta last year, and Ducati’s management is expediting his entry into their premier team, highlighting his potential as Marquez’s successor. This move surprised some, including former rider Jorge Lorenzo, who wondered why Marquez did not oppose Acosta joining the team, given the implicit rivalry.
Journalist Mela Chercoles shares insights that Acosta’s ambition is closely tied to being alongside Marquez, no matter which team the latter rides for.
Acosta’s Commitment to Race Alongside Marquez Regardless of Team
Speaking to Motociclismo, Mela Chercoles revealed that Acosta planned to sign with whichever team Marc Marquez chose in 2027, reflecting his desire to compete with equal machinery against the sport’s best. Chercoles stated,
“I’ll tell you one thing. Pedro Acosta, and I know this for a fact, would have gone to whichever team Marc Marquez had gone to,”
he said.
“In other words, if Marc had decided to leave Ducati for Honda, he would have signed with Honda to have the same weapons as the best rider of the moment, perhaps in history for many.”
“And he tells me that if Marc Marquez had decided to go to KTM, Acosta would have stayed at KTM. I mean, I’m convinced of that, I know it for a fact.”
Chercoles also compared Acosta’s mindset to other rivalries like Jorge Lorenzo’s battle with Valentino Rossi, emphasizing Acosta’s determination not just to race Marquez but to measure himself fairly on equal footing.
“He wants to measure himself as an equal with Marc Marquez, as Jorge Lorenzo did with Valentino Rossi at Yamaha. I mean, Jorge Lorenzo’s great pride, he has five titles, three in MotoGP, is having beaten Valentino Rossi with his own weapons.”
“Even better, because Acosta wants the same thing, he wants to really know where he stands compared to Marc. He’s not saying that he’s going to win, but he wants to have the equipment to try to beat him, to dream that he can beat him, and I think that’s fantastic.”
“And he knows that where Marc Marquez is going to be for the next two years is the official Ducati pit, the red pit, at Lenovo, and that’s where he’s gone, he’s got his way.”
Potential Team Moves for Acosta and Marquez Before Settling at Ducati
The possibility of Acosta and Marquez pairing up in different teams has been considered for a while in MotoGP circles. In 2024, KTM tried to form a third team featuring both riders, but this plan was blocked by Dorna, the sport’s governing body. Both riders also held talks with Honda for 2027, yet Honda ultimately signed Fabio Quartararo from Yamaha.
Marquez was approached by KTM, a move that could have influenced Acosta to remain with the Austrian manufacturer. Nevertheless, both are now confirmed to be teammates at Ducati, bringing together two highly skilled riders in an eagerly anticipated collaboration.
What This Means for the Future of MotoGP
Acosta’s decision to follow Marquez to Ducati signals a compelling new chapter in MotoGP, where intense rivalries and top-performing equipment often define championship outcomes. By committing to race directly alongside Marquez with equal machinery, Acosta is positioning himself to challenge one of the finest riders in history and test his own limits as a rising star.
This alignment could reshape Ducati’s team dynamics and influence competition strategies, potentially intensifying battles on the track in upcoming seasons. Fans and analysts will closely watch how this partnership unfolds and whether Acosta can finally claim his maiden MotoGP victory while challenging Marquez’s legacy.
