Pedro Acosta has surged to the top of the 2026 MotoGP standings after an impressive performance at the Thai Grand Prix, securing both a Sprint race win and a second-place finish in the main event. His exceptional focus and determination have drawn praise from KTM crew chief Paul Trevathan, who highlighted Acosta’s mental strength and work ethic as key factors behind his early success.
During the Sprint race, Acosta engaged in a fierce battle with Marc Marquez, briefly being forced off track due to Marquez’s aggressive maneuver, but ultimately clinching victory following a penalty to the Ducati rider. On Sunday, Acosta managed to outpace both Marquez and teammate Raul Fernandez to settle for second place behind Marco Bezzecchi, whose fast pace was unmatched. These results have propelled both Acosta and KTM to lead the world championship after the opening round.
Growth and Development Behind Acosta’s Rising Performance
Despite finishing fourth overall in the 2025 season without any wins, Acosta’s progress had been steadily building. Winter testing suggested he would be a consistent podium contender, but his performance at Buriram exceeded many expectations. Trevathan emphasized that Acosta is evolving not only as a rider but also as a person.
“He’s still young, maturing every year as a man, and he’s trying to find out all those situations and understand what being a MotoGP rider is,”
Paul Trevathan said.
“That was a big thing last year. Trying to put the race craft together, trying to put everything together. He had the speed; this was clear from day one, but all the boys have speed;
”
he added, highlighting the elite level of competitiveness on the grid.

“I think many people forget how fast all these riders are, how many champions sit on the grid.”
Trevathan noted.
Team Efforts and Factory Advances Contribute to Success
The impressive start to the season is attributed to both KTM’s winter development work and Acosta’s relentless commitment to improving. Trevathan acknowledged the factory’s role but stressed Acosta’s influence in pushing the team forward.
“We weren’t so competitive last year. We’ve worked really hard in the winter, and I have to say the factory’s done a fantastic job, but Pedro also,”
Trevathan said.
“Just building on [last year], putting things together, keeping the pressure on us in the box to work on all the details, but not do crazy stuff. So yeah, really happy.”
Following the first round in Thailand, Acosta leads the championship by seven points over Bezzecchi and holds a 23-point advantage against Marquez. His teammate Brad Binder finished sixth and seventh in the Sprint and main race, respectively, marking a solid team showing.
Upcoming Challenges and Championship Outlook
As the MotoGP season moves to its next stage in Brazil, Pedro Acosta’s focus and consistency will be vital to maintaining his lead in the fiercely contested championship. The early momentum generated by both the rider and KTM suggests they will continue to be a force to watch, while rival riders like Marquez and Bezzecchi remain determined to close the gap. Acosta’s blend of youthful talent and growing experience positions him as a strong contender for the world title this year.
