Pedro Acosta, the young talent from Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, is focused on capturing his first MotoGP victory in the upcoming season. At just 21 years old, Acosta rates his current readiness as a six out of ten while preparing for key tests and races, determined to close the gap with dominant teams like Ducati.
Testing Performance Reveals Strengths and Areas for Improvement
During the latest MotoGP testing, Acosta posted a best morning session time of 1:57.253, placing eighth overall on the combined timesheet. Although this was slower than his personal best of 1:57.116 earlier in the week, he concentrated on his race pace, completing 26 laps in a simulated race to evaluate consistency and endurance. Acosta expressed confidence in his ability to compete with the top riders, saying,
“I believe I can run with the top five,”
highlighting his focus on steady performance rather than single fast laps.
Challenges Against Ducati’s Dominance
Despite his encouraging pace, Acosta acknowledged the clear performance gap between his KTM bike and the powerful Ducati GP26 machines driven by rivals like Alex Márquez and Pecco Bagnaia. He admitted,
“There were a couple of unexpected things with the bike during the simulation,”
and confirmed, “We’re still slower than Ducati,” underscoring the technical challenges that remain before he can contend at the very front of the field.
Preparation Continues Ahead of Thailand Test
Looking forward to the official test in Buriram, Thailand, scheduled for February 21-22, Acosta emphasized the importance of refining his bike’s components and strategy. He explained,
“The goal here was to understand the components we’ll take to Thailand,”
revealing a tactical approach as he aims to optimize his equipment in time for the season opener, now less than a month away.
Focus on Consistency and Learning from Experience
Despite encountering technical difficulties during extended runs, Acosta chose to concentrate on steady riding and minimizing errors. He noted,
“I ran with the best package we have. I aimed to keep it steady and avoid mistakes,”
demonstrating a mature perspective on how to advance his performance even amid setbacks.
Outlook for the 2027 MotoGP Season
As the MotoGP calendar draws near, Pedro Acosta’s ambition and resilience position him as a formidable contender eager to convert potential into podium finishes. Though the challenges of competing against established rivals like Marc Marquez and Toprak Razgatlioglu remain, Acosta’s hunger and progress through testing suggest that 2027 could mark a turning point in his career. His ongoing development with KTM will be pivotal in closing the gap to Ducati’s front runners, setting the stage for an intense and hopeful MotoGP season ahead.
