Phillip Island MotoGP Relocation to Albert Park Blocked

The Victorian state government has declined a request to transfer the Australian MotoGP round from Phillip Island to Albert Park, home of the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix. The existing MotoGP contract at Phillip Island expires after the 2026 season, but talks of renewal have stalled amid infrastructure demands and relocation discussions.

Infrastructure Concerns Prompt Calls for Upgrades or Relocation

Promoters have reportedly insisted on major improvements, especially to the pit and paddock facilities at Phillip Island, to meet MotoGP standards. Alternatively, they suggested moving the race to Melbourne’s Albert Park street circuit. Carlos Ezpeleta, MotoGP’s sporting director, emphasized the need for enhancements, saying,

“They need to make improvements to bring the event up to the standards we want for MotoGP.”

Government Affirms Commitment to Phillip Island Event

Despite interest in shifting the race, the Victorian government firmly opposed the move, stating,

“The Australian Motorcycle GP is synonymous with Phillip Island, and Victoria is proud to support it.”

The government has pledged to provide additional funding for upgrades at Phillip Island, contingent on the race remaining at that location.

Liberty Media’s Role and Future Calendar Considerations

Under the ownership of Liberty Media, which also manages Formula 1, there has been speculation about optimizing racing calendars by hosting MotoGP and F1 events together at Albert Park. However, with the government’s decision, Phillip Island remains the designated venue for the MotoGP Australian round.
