Pierre Gasly Reflects on Tsunoda Collision in Saudi GP: No Bad Blood with Former Teammate

During the opening lap of Sunday’s Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, a dramatic collision unfolded between Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda as they fiercely contested eighth place. The incident, occurring in a high-stakes scenario, unfortunately sent both drivers spinning off the track, abruptly ending their races. Despite the crash’s dramatic impact, Gasly chose not to comment on penalties post-race, instead attributing the incident to the intense nature of racing and expressing an understanding of Tsunoda’s driving decisions, shaped by their past as teammates at AlphaTauri.

Gasly, who shared seasons with Tsunoda at the Red Bull sister team in 2021 and 2022, acknowledged the familiarity between them, emphasizing that he didn’t believe Tsunoda acted with any malicious intent. The Alpine driver noted, however, that such incidents, while part of the sport, are never pleasant for any driver involved.

The collision occurred dramatically between turns three and four, as both drivers maneuvered through a tight left turn. Their proximity led to inevitable contact, sending them crashing into the wall. Gasly’s strategy and qualifying efforts had placed him ninth on the grid, mirroring his start in the season opener in Australia, albeit his highest qualifying position this year was fourth in Bahrain.

Reflecting on the race, Gasly revealed he was less troubled by the clash with the Red Bull Racing driver and more disappointed about the lost opportunity to challenge drivers like Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon, who secured top ten finishes. Gasly had shown potential to position himself competitively alongside these front-running figures, emphasizing what might have been without the collision.

Adding to the disappointment for the Alpine team, Gasly’s teammate, Jack Doohan, concluded the race in 17th position, signaling a point-less weekend for the team in Jeddah. This outcome likely fuels a resolve within Gasly and his team to regroup and strategize for upcoming races, aiming to harness their full potential and avoid similar setbacks.

As the racing world reflects on the intense contest at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, Pierre Gasly’s composed response and insight into the dynamics with Yuki Tsunoda underline his professionalism. The focus now shifts to how both drivers and their teams will adapt and respond in future events, illuminating the ever-competitive and challenging nature of Formula One racing.
