Thirteen-year-old Keelan Harvick recently advanced in his racing career by signing a driver development agreement with Toyota Racing Development. Known for winning some of the top late model races nationwide, Keelan has already built a strong reputation in racing circles. This move caught the attention of 2023 Cup Series champion Ryan Blaney, who shared an intriguing story about the young competitor.
Ryan Blaney Reacts to Keelan’s Toyota Deal
During the Door, Bumper, Clear podcast, Blaney expressed surprise over Toyota securing Harvick’s talent rather than Hendrick Motorsports. He recalled a moment when they were at a Panthers game and fans excitedly called out to Keelan for autographs. Blaney said,
“We were at a Panthers game. We are in our little area. Kevin’s there. These fans are hollering over at us, ‘Keelan! Keelan! Can you sign? Can you sign?”
Continuing, Blaney added,
“Kevin and I are standing there like, ‘F*** us, right?’ I got a picture of Keelan handing back a hat to this guy, and I was like, ‘Yeah, it’s coming. New wave, man.”
His story highlights how rapidly Harvick’s popularity and performance on the track are rising, signaling strong potential ahead.
Why Keelan Chose Toyota for His Development
When asked about his reasons for signing with Toyota, Keelan focused on the team’s success, stating,
“They win a lot, and I want to be with an organization that wins.”
Both Toyota and Chevrolet have developed extensive driver support systems, including physical and mental training, to nurture emerging talent. Toyota, in particular, offers a close partnership with Tricon Garage in the Truck Series, providing young drivers opportunities to compete and demonstrate their abilities at higher levels.
A Clear Path Toward NASCAR’s Cup Series
Keelan’s new contract puts him on a direct trajectory toward NASCAR’s premier Cup Series. His father, Kevin Harvick, the 2014 Cup Series champion, agrees that Toyota is an ideal fit at this stage, despite never having driven for the manufacturer himself. Kevin explained the decision, saying,
“We’ve concentrated a lot on development and have a theory on how it should go, and I felt like the Toyota process matched what we would do. I think that the effort that Toyota puts into, not only the driving piece of it, but the human piece of it, is very important to us as a family. That was really one of the biggest reasons why we went this direction.”
Next Steps for Keelan Before Racing in NASCAR
Since NASCAR rules require drivers to be at least 16 years old to compete in the Truck Series, Keelan still has some time before he makes his official NASCAR debut. Until then, he will continue training with top experts, preparing to become the sport’s next major star.
