Santino Ferrucci Voices Frustration Over 2025 Indy 500 Prep: “I’m Fed Up Trying to Make This Work”

Santino Ferrucci, a driver for A. J. Foyt Racing, is gearing up for his seventh Indianapolis 500, scheduled for May 25th as part of the 109th running of the iconic race. Despite his past successes, Ferrucci revealed his mounting frustrations during practice sessions, signaling challenges with his current car setup and questioning its competitiveness compared to last year’s machine.

During Wednesday’s practice, championship leader Alex Palou set the pace at 227.546 mph, while Santino Ferrucci found himself 33rd out of 34, recording a speed of 220.566 mph. When approached by an IndyCar pit lane reporter about his feelings after trying different setups and managing traffic on track, Ferrucci openly expressed his disappointment and a desire to revert to the previous year’s car, stating that he does not see much promise with the current vehicle.

Last year, at the 108th Indianapolis 500, Ferrucci impressed by reaching the Firestone Fast Six and starting the race in sixth position. His performance throughout the grueling 200 laps saw him finish eighth, marking another top-10 result in his Indy 500 career. His consistent record includes never finishing outside the top 10 in any of his six previous Indianapolis 500 appearances, demonstrating steady skill and perseverance under pressure.

Santino Ferrucci gained wider recognition in the 2019 race, bolstered by praise from Dale Earnhardt Jr. for his bold driving style. That year, Ferrucci earned the Rookie of the Year award after finishing seventh in the 103rd Indianapolis 500, a debut that showcased his potential to fans and experts alike. On the Pit Pass Indy podcast, he shared his approach to handling the pressure, advising drivers not to get overwhelmed by the hype surrounding the event and to treat it like any other race on the calendar.

Currently positioned 15th in the 2025 NTT IndyCar Series standings with 73 points, Santino Ferrucci faces a critical period as he attempts to overcome obstacles with his car’s performance. His honest reflections underline the challenges even experienced drivers face in adapting to new conditions and equipment while competing at the sport’s highest level. With the Indy 500 looming, how Ferrucci and his team respond to these difficulties will be crucial for maintaining his strong presence in this prestigious event.
